Match Preview
To its advantage for two seasons now, Aston Villa is now positioning itself as a serious contender for European places. This revival coincides with the arrival on the bench of Spanish technician Unai Emery. Last year, the Birmingham-based team defied all odds to take 4th place in the Premier League and thus qualify for the Champions League. The Villans hope to join the fight for the Big 4 again this season. Beaten at home by Arsenal during the 2nd day 0-2, they otherwise won on the lawns of West Ham 1-2 and Leicester just before the international break 1-2. Next Tuesday, Aston Villa begins its C1 campaign on the Young Boys pitch. Bored by financial concerns, Everton has been experiencing difficulties for several seasons.
Close to the descent in 2022 and 2023, the Mersey club, on the other hand, performed better during the previous year. Despite an 8-point withdrawal inflicted by the Federation, the Toffees finished in 15th place in the Premier League, 14 points ahead of the first relegated team. Unfortunately, they are off to a very poor start this season and are already in last place in the standings. First soundly beaten by Brighton 0-3 and Tottenham 4-0, Everton then let slip a 2-goal advantage at the very end of the match to lose at home against Bournemouth before the international break 2-3. In the League Cup, however, Sean Dyche's men dominated Doncaster to enter the competition 3-0.
The defensive sector is weakened on the Aston Villa side. Indeed, the long-term absentees Mings and Kamara have still not recovered from their physical problems. This is also the case for the starting full-back Cash and the usual substitute Diego Carlos. Arriving at the club this summer, Belgian midfielder Onana has had a very good debut (2 goals in 3 PL matches). On the other hand, striker Watkins, who was not present with the England team due to a minor injury, has not yet scored while his replacement found the net twice. This summer, midfielder Douglas Luiz (Juventus) and winger Diaby (Al-Ittihad) brought a lot of money to the club. Furthermore, the less important Archer (Southampton), Iroegbunam (Everton), Dendoncker (Anderlecht), Sanson (Nice), Chambers (Cardiff), Coutinho (Vasco da Gama) and Alex Moreno (Nottingham Forest) also left the club. Finally, Lenglet (Barcelona) and Zaniolo (Galatasaray) were not retained after their loan while newcomers Barrenechea (Valencia) and Iling-Junior (Bologna) were immediately loaned. In the opposite direction, Onana (Everton), Maatsen (Chelsea), Philogene (Hull) and Barkley (Luton Town) arrived at the club. Everton still has to deal with the withdrawals of senior defender Branthwaite, offensive recruit Broja and the usual replacements Patterson and Chermiti.
Affected by the selection, the fragile right side Coleman is, for his part, uncertain. Very crumbly behind, the Toffees have already conceded 10 goals after 3 days. Against Bournemouth, Calvert-Lewin stood out with a goal and an assist. He should still be supported by the former Marseillais Ndiaye. During the off-season, Everton made a great financial transaction by selling the very good Belgian midfielder Onana (Aston Villa). Added to this are the transfers of Godfrey (Atalanta) and Dobbin (Aston Villa) as well as the departure at the end of his contract of Andre Gomes. Returning from Brentford this summer, striker Maupay was loaned to OM. These movements allowed the Toffees to strengthen with the arrivals of Ligue 1 residents O'Brien (Lyon), Mangala (Lyon) and Ndiaye (OM) but also midfielder Iroegbunam (Aston Villa) and attackers Lindström (Naples) and Broja (Chelsea).

Tip Reasoning
Whether playing at home or away, defending Everton have been absolutely brilliant for a sustained period of time now, as reflected by the fact that their last 20 top-flight matches have yielded 15 wins and five draws. For their part, Aston Villa are winless in nine league games in front of their own supporters, losing no fewer than six of these encounters.
