Five Football Betting Markets Behind Dramatic Match Endings
Five famous football matches reveal the differences between match-winner bets, qualification markets, stoppage-time goals and penalty shootouts when checking betting results.

A bet on Liverpool to win at Anfield in May 2019 was not the same as backing them to reach the Champions League final. Barcelona had won the first leg 3-0, so Liverpool needed more than an ordinary home victory to stay in the competition.
That is easy to forget when a match is remembered mainly for its final score. A team can win the evening and lose the tie. In another competition, it might advance after drawing for 120 minutes.
Prices found through bizbet or another bookmaker depend on the precise market being offered. These five matches are useful examples of how the same football result can mean different things on a betting slip.
1. Liverpool vs Barcelona - Winning Wasn't Enough
Liverpool's task in the return leg was complicated before kick-off. Barcelona had brought a three-goal advantage to Anfield, while the home side were missing Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino.
An ordinary Liverpool win would have been enough for a match-result bet, regardless of what happened in Barcelona. Qualification was another matter, with the home team needing to overturn the aggregate deficit.
Divock Origi scored early, followed by two goals from substitute Georginio Wijnaldum. Trent Alexander-Arnold then spotted Origi unmarked and took a quick corner, allowing the forward to score Liverpool's fourth.
The evening ended 4-0, with Liverpool advancing 4-3 on aggregate.
Consider what would have happened at 2-0. A home-win bet would have been successful, although Barcelona would still have qualified. The selection of Liverpool to reach the final needed a different outcome altogether.
The UEFA account of the 2019 comeback records the result of the match and the aggregate victory. A betting slip might have included either market, and the club name alone wouldn't identify which one had been chosen.
2. Ajax vs Tottenham - The Rule That No Longer Applies
Tottenham's victory in Amsterdam followed a peculiar calculation. Ajax had won the first leg 1-0 and extended that advantage with two first-half goals in the return fixture. Spurs were now trailing 3-0 across the tie.
Lucas Moura brought Tottenham back with two goals after half-time. He completed his hat-trick deep into stoppage time, and the 3-2 victory left the teams level at 3-3 on aggregate.
There was no extra time. Tottenham advanced through their superior away-goals record, having scored three in Amsterdam compared with Ajax's one in London.
At the time, that rule could decide a knockout tie with the teams level on aggregate. Tottenham had scored three away goals; Ajax had scored one. A qualification bet therefore had to be assessed under the rules in force for that particular tournament.
The arrangement changed before the 2021-22 season, when UEFA removed the away-goals rule from its club competitions. Under the revised rules, an aggregate draw leads to extra time and potentially a penalty shootout.
For someone reading historical betting results, that difference can't be ignored. The old market was settled correctly under the old conditions, even though a similar match today could continue for another half-hour.
3. Morocco vs Spain - The Winner of a Draw
Morocco reached the 2022 World Cup quarter-finals without scoring during its knockout match against Spain. The teams were still level at 0-0 after extra time, leaving a penalty shootout to determine who would advance.
Spain failed to convert any of its three attempts, and Morocco won the shootout 3-0. The tournament continued for Morocco, although the match score remained goalless.
A person who backed the draw in the ordinary match-result market would have a different betting record from somebody who selected Morocco to qualify. Yet both could have backed a successful outcome.
The shootout didn't turn the official match score into a 3-0 victory. It decided which side advanced.
For this fixture, three separate selections could be examined:
- Draw after 90 minutes: successful.
- Morocco to qualify: successful.
- Under 0.5 goals in regular time: successful.
These markets refer to different aspects of the same contest. The qualification result includes what happened after normal playing time; the ordinary goals total doesn't count shootout penalties.
That distinction remains important on mobile. Information available through bizbet download apk concerns Android access, not the conditions attached to a particular football wager. The market description still needs to identify whether extra time or qualification is included.
4. Manchester City vs QPR - The 90th Minute Trap
At the end of the 2011-12 Premier League season, Manchester City needed a victory against Queens Park Rangers to secure the title. They were losing 2-1 when the match entered stoppage time.
Edin Džeko equalised. Sergio Agüero then scored the goal that gave City a 3-2 win.
The clock had passed 90 minutes, but neither goal came during extra time. They were scored in the additional minutes allowed by the referee at the end of the second half.
For an ordinary full-time result market, those goals counted exactly as goals scored earlier in the match would have done.
The total-goals markets provide another way to examine those closing minutes. At 2-1, three goals had been scored. Džeko's header made four; Agüero's finish made five.
Someone holding over 4.5 goals needed the winner, while an over 2.5 selection had already succeeded before either stoppage-time goal.
A score displayed late in the match may suggest how a bet is progressing. Settlement still depends on the score when the relevant playing period has finished.
5. Argentina vs France - Which Final Score Counts?
Argentina's World Cup victory in 2022 involved a draw after 90 minutes, another draw after extra time and a winning penalty shootout. Each stage supplied a different result for the relevant betting markets.
Argentina were leading 2-0 before Kylian Mbappé scored twice late in the second half. His equaliser left the final at 2-2 when the referee ended ordinary time.
Lionel Messi scored again during extra time, putting Argentina ahead 3-2. Mbappé then completed his hat-trick from the penalty spot, sending the match to a shootout at 3-3. Argentina won that shootout 4-2 and collected the trophy.
A bettor holding both a regular-time draw and an Argentina trophy-winner selection would have seen two winning outcomes. The draw was settled at 2-2; the trophy market depended on who ultimately won the shootout.
A total-goals bet adds another layer. Over 4.5 goals limited to regular time would have been lost because the score was 2-2. If the market explicitly included extra time, the six goals scored before the shootout would have taken it over that line.
The penalties that decided the trophy aren't added to the usual match-goals total.
Argentina's victory is therefore an excellent reminder to read the entire market name. Match result, result after extra time and trophy winner aren't alternative labels for one selection.
Reading the Bet Before the Final Whistle
A quick look at the five betting slips would reveal several quite different outcomes. Liverpool won a return leg and qualified on aggregate. Tottenham also progressed from a two-leg tie, but under the away-goals rule used in 2019.
Morocco's penalty victory left the match score at 0-0, while the late goals against QPR were included in Manchester City's ordinary full-time result. Argentina's final had separate scores after 90 and 120 minutes before the trophy was settled.
Those aren't minor technicalities when money has been placed on a particular selection. Someone backing a team to qualify is making a different wager from somebody choosing that team to win in regular time.
The relevant conditions should be visible in the market description before the bet is accepted. Once the fixture begins, the score may change repeatedly, but the playing period and settlement terms of the accepted selection remain the basis for determining its outcome.
