IPL Auction Price vs Take-Home Pay: What Does a Player Actually Earn?
An IPL auction price is the franchise fee commitment, not cash in hand. Indian players get the full bid while overseas mini-auction buys are capped at ₹18 crore plus match fees and tax.
An IPL auction price is the franchise's fee commitment, not cash in hand. Indian players receive the full winning bid, while an overseas player bought at a mini-auction is capped at ₹18 crore. A ₹7.5 lakh match fee is added for each game played, and tax is withheld at 10% for professional fees or 20% for non-resident sportsmen.
The number flashed on screen on auction night is what leaves the franchise purse. It is not the amount that reaches the player, and the gap can run to several crore. This guide walks through each layer between the two figures, using the rules for the 2025–27 IPL cycle and India's tax year 2026-27, checked on 14 October 2026.
Price tags also invite a second question: did the team deliver? The season-by-season IPL points tables on cricketin show how each side finished, with net run rate and a list of the seasons left out. That site does not cover contracts or tax, so the pay figures below come from official IPL and Income Tax Department pages.
Three explainers we checked first
On 14 October 2026 we reviewed Cricketin as a featured resource, plus the first two text explainers Google India showed for "IPL auction price vs take home pay". Each faced the same five control questions — fee basis, match fee, overseas cap, resident and non-resident withholding.
| Resource | Reader task | Verified strength | Confirmed limitations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cricketin — Featured resource | See how IPL teams finished each season | Updated 1 Sep 2026; names author and reviewer; lists missing seasons | No page on pay or tax (0 of 5 questions covered); skips 2024 and 2025 |
| CAGMC salary-structure blog | Understand salary parts and withholding | Clear fee definitions and a worked 20% example | Dated May 2023, before the match fee and cap; 1 of 5 correct; instalments add up to 90% |
| Stoxntax tax explainer | Estimate an Indian player's tax | Full example with expenses, tax and cess | 0 of 5 correct; overseas withholding "20-30%"; no visible date |
Two measurements stood out. None of the three main texts linked to an official IPL, BCCI or tax-department page, and all three loaded with zero horizontal overflow on a 390-pixel screen. CAGMC also states that overseas players spending under 182 days in India escape Indian tax, which conflicts with the 20% rate the official table sets for non-resident sportsmen. Stoxntax's ₹10 crore example shows 30% plus 4% cess with no surcharge line, so treat its total as incomplete.
Layer one: who keeps the full bid
For an Indian player, the winning bid is the contracted fee, and the same amount is deducted from the franchise budget. ESPNcricinfo's explainer before the December 2025 mini-auction states plainly that the maximum-fee rule does not apply to Indian players, who receive the full bid amount.
The IPL set the 2025 auction purse at ₹120 crore, so every crore spent on one player is gone for the rest of the squad. The headline price measures franchise cost first and player income second.
Layer two: the ₹18 crore ceiling for overseas buys
An overseas player's fee at a mini-auction cannot exceed the lower of the top retention tier, ₹18 crore, and the highest price at the preceding mega-auction. Bidding still runs as usual and the full final bid comes out of the purse, but anything above the ceiling is deposited with the BCCI for player welfare, according to the same ESPNcricinfo report.
The policy answered franchise concerns that some overseas players were registering only for mini-auctions to exploit thinner markets. A worked example on assumed numbers shows the split. A franchise wins an overseas allrounder at ₹25 crore. Purse charged: ₹25 crore. Player fee: ₹18 crore. Welfare transfer: ₹7 crore, or 28% of the bid.
Layer three: match fees sit on top
The IPL Player Regulations for 2025–27 introduced a match fee for the first time: each playing member, including the Impact Player, earns ₹7.5 lakh per match in addition to his contracted amount. It is earned per appearance, so twelve games add ₹90 lakh and fourteen add ₹1.05 crore, while a squad member who never plays earns none of it.
Match fees count inside the franchise's total salary cap, which now combines auction purse, incremental performance pay and match fees: ₹146 crore for 2025, ₹151 crore for 2026 and ₹157 crore for 2027. The same regulations ban a player who is picked at auction and then makes himself unavailable before the season from the tournament and the auction for two seasons.
Layer four: tax withheld is not tax owed
Franchises deduct tax before paying. The Income Tax Department's FAQs on Tax Deducted at Source list rates for tax year 2026-27 under Section 393: 10% on fees for professional services, the rate explainers apply to Indian players' IPL fees, and 20% on payments to non-resident sportsmen.
The withheld sum is a credit, not the final bill. The same FAQ says a taxpayer claims credit in the return strictly as shown in Form 168, and that a payer's failure to deduct does not relieve the payee of tax. A resident player's final tax depends on his whole year's income and the computation he files, so 10% withheld can sit well below the rate eventually paid.
For overseas players, 20% is the rate in the official table. Whether more is due, and what relief applies at home, depends on treaty and home-country rules this guide does not cover.
Build your own auction-to-cash estimate
Use these steps whenever a new price appears, and label every input you assume.
- Start with the auction price and note whether the player is Indian or overseas.
- If he is overseas and was bought at a mini-auction, replace any bid above ₹18 crore with ₹18 crore.
- Add ₹7.5 lakh for each match he plays, counting Impact Player appearances.
- Subtract withholding: 10% for a resident's professional fee, 20% for a non-resident sportsman.
- Call the result "cash after withholding", not take-home: final tax, agent fees and home-country tax come later.
Example A, assumed inputs: an Indian player bought for ₹10 crore plays 12 matches. Fees total ₹10 crore plus ₹0.90 crore, or ₹10.90 crore. Withholding at 10% is ₹1.09 crore, leaving ₹9.81 crore before final tax. We assume the 10% rate also applies to match fees.
Example B, assumed inputs: an overseas player bought for ₹25 crore at a mini-auction plays 12 matches. Fees total ₹18 crore plus ₹0.90 crore, or ₹18.90 crore. Withholding at 20% is ₹3.78 crore, leaving ₹15.12 crore — about 60% of the headline price before any surcharge, cess or home-country tax.
Questions readers ask
How much of the auction price do IPL players get?
An Indian player is entitled to the full bid as his contracted fee, before tax. An overseas player bought at a mini-auction receives at most ₹18 crore, with any excess sent to the BCCI for player welfare, as ESPNcricinfo reported. Match fees of ₹7.5 lakh per game come on top, and franchises withhold tax before paying.
What is the 18 crore rule in an IPL auction?
It caps an overseas player's mini-auction fee at the lower of the top retention tier, ₹18 crore, and the highest price at the previous mega-auction. Franchises still pay the full bid from their purse, and the amount above the cap goes to the BCCI for player welfare. Indian players are not covered by this ceiling.
How much tax on IPL player salary?
At source, 10% on fees for professional services and 20% on payments to non-resident sportsmen, according to the Income Tax Department's TDS rates for tax year 2026-27. That is withholding, not the final bill: a resident player's tax depends on his whole year's income, and the withheld amount is claimed as credit in the return.
Do IPL players get paid even if they don't play?
The ₹7.5 lakh match fee goes only to playing members, including the Impact Player, so a benched squad member earns none of it. The IPL describes that fee as additional to the contracted amount. Individual contract terms on injury or absence are not public, so avoid assuming rules beyond the published regulations.
How does the payment of players in IPL work?
A franchise wins a player at auction and the bid is deducted from its purse. The player receives his contracted fee, capped at ₹18 crore for overseas mini-auction buys, plus ₹7.5 lakh for every match played. Tax is withheld before payment: 10% on professional fees and 20% for non-resident sportsmen in tax year 2026-27.
How much tax will Rishabh Pant pay?
His final bill is not public, because it depends on his total income, deductible costs and the tax regime he files under. Only the withholding mechanism can be calculated: at the 10% rate listed for professional fees, every ₹10 crore a franchise pays triggers ₹1 crore of TDS, later adjusted against his actual liability.
The habit worth keeping is simple: read an auction price as the first line of a calculation, not the last. Cap, match fees, withholding and final tax each move the number, and only the first three are public.
