The Ancient Roots of Modern RNG Gaming
Randomness has been part of games for a very long time, long before computers or digital systems existed. Explore the ancient roots of RNG in modern gaming from dice to video games.

Randomness has been part of games for a very long time, long before computers or digital systems existed. People were already using chance to shape outcomes in play thousands of years ago, with early forms of dice found in ancient settlements across Mesopotamia, Egypt and the wider Mediterranean region. These objects were simple, but they introduced a clear idea that results in a game did not always need to be fixed or predictable. That idea has carried through into modern gaming in different forms. Now, in the modern day, we see RNG systems in a lot of different ways, especially in video games, which is why we will be taking a look back at the ancient roots of this style of game.
Ancient Dice
The earliest tools for generating random outcomes were not always what we would now recognise as dice. In several ancient cultures, small bones known as astragali were used because they could land in a limited number of stable positions. Over time, these were replaced by more regular shapes made from materials like bone, stone and ivory, forming early six-sided dice. Archaeological findings suggest that these objects were used in both games and decision-making contexts, showing an early interest in structured chance rather than pure skill.
Early Random Games
In early societies, random outcomes were often seen as something that was more than just chance. A throw of a dice or even an object was preferred as it did not involve human control and was completely down to chance and fate. This meant that randomness carried purpose outside of the game itself, which differs slightly today. In the modern era, it is understood through mathematical terms, but earlier cultures often connected it to belief systems that tried to explain uncertainty in everyday life.
Board Games to Betting
As games became more structured, randomness began to take a clearer role in gameplay, such as in the likes of board and even early card-based games. Dice were commonly used to decide the movement or outcomes, which added an element of unpredictability that aligned with the game’s rules. Historical records from different regions have highlighted how games involving chance were often linked to some earlier forms of wagering, similar to what we may find today in casinos. Over time, this helped to establish a closer connection between gaming and utilising chance to achieve different outcomes.
The Casino Era
With the rise of organised gambling houses, chance stopped being tied only to simple objects held in the hand and started to be built into mechanical setups. Games such as roulette used fixed physical systems where the outcome came from movement and design rather than direct human control. These systems were made to be unpredictable in practice, despite having underlying probabilities that would carefully calculate the result of an event. As a result, randomness became something that could be engineered into the game itself, rather than left to be an unformatted mechanic.
RNG in Video Games
When video games emerged, randomness was translated into software through random number generation. The early systems could understand basic code in order to introduce the variation into gameplay, including circumstances like encounters or item drops. As technology has developed further, these systems have become more detailed and have been integrated into the core gameplay mechanics. In today’s gaming industry, RNG (random number generator) is a standard part of many games, used to create variation and outcomes that cannot be predicted or controlled by humans.
Modern Day Chance Engineering
In modern game design, randomness is usually handled through structured systems, often known as drop tables. These set out the chances of different outcomes that could occur during the gameplay, giving developers a way to balance levels of consistency with variety. This can also be found in other ideas, such as progression systems and rewards, where the results are often defined by the probability behind the game, rather than a fixed outcome. It keeps the same sense of unpredictability, but within limits that are carefully calculated and controlled by humans.
Continuous Development
Looking across history, the way randomness is used in games has changed in form, but never in principle. At the start, dice made of bone dominated the systems, completely different to the video games we find today, but both follow the same fundamentals. Each stage of the development reflects the development of understanding as well as technologies, which still continue to grow. Looking ahead, randomness in games is likely to become even more refined rather than removed. As systems grow more advanced, developers will be able to adjust probability and variation in real time based on player behaviour and design goals. The core idea will stay the same, but the way chance is delivered will continue to shift with technology and how games are built.
