PSG 4-0 Real Madrid: Two Other Teams Which Mauled Los Blancos This Season

Real Madrid's 2024/25 season came to a miserable end on July 9th as the Spanish giants were thumped 4-0 by newly minted European Champions Paris Saint-Germain at MetLife Stadium in the semifinals of the FIFA Club World Cup. Los Blancos headed into the contest with genuine hope that they might well salvage their season at the final possible opportunity. But unfortunately for them, those hopes were decimated within 24 minutes as the Parisians raced into a three-goal lead.

Two defensive calamities in three minutes saw Fabián Ruiz and Ousmane Dembele open up a 2-0 lead, before a second for Ruiz in the 24th minute all but ended the contest. Goncalo Ramos added another three minutes before full time to complete the 4-0 rout and leave the reigning French and European Champions one step away from adding the title of World Champions to their honors board. For Real, however, it's the latest in a long line of familiar disappointments.

Real Madrid's Dismal Campaign

The side from the Spanish capital has endured a dismal campaign this season, missing out on all three domestic trophies to their archrivals Barcelona, as well as suffering a quarterfinal exit in the UEFA Champions League. Real had won both El Clásico games the previous campaign, but with this late-October clash finely poised at 0-0 at halftime, it was clear that they would have to work hard to emerge with another victory. But rather than letting Los Blancos get any kind of stranglehold on the clash, Barca came out for the second half like a team possessed. A two-minute brace from prolific striker Robert Lewandowski, as well as later strikes from teenage prodigy Lamine Yamal and captain Raphinha, secured a thumping 4-0 for the Catalonians.

That triumph set the Blaugrana en route to the title, and while it was the biggest, it wasn't the last victory that they would secure over their archrivals in the 2024/25 season. Barcelona won the return La Liga clash on home turf by four goals to three, overturning a 2-0 deficit in the process. They also beat their El Clasico rivals in both the Copa Del Rey and Spanish Super Cup finals to end their season with all three domestic trophies, while Los Blancos ended up empty-handed.

Arsenal

While Real Madrid had been scooping up trophies left, right, and center in recent years, Arsenal had been without a major trophy since a 2020 FA Cup triumph. You would have to go all the way back to 2004 for their last English Premier League crown, while they have never won the UEFA Champions League. Compare that with Los Blancos, who were the record 15-time and reigning European champions, and it was clear to see who was the favorite for the clash between the two teams in this year's quarterfinals.

To make the Gunners' task even more daunting, they were without a recognized striker for their mouthwatering clash with Real following injuries to both Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz. But despite that, the London outfit managed to rip up the script and deliver a damaging blow to Los Blancos' hopes. A pair of stunning Declan Rice free-kicks gave Arsenal a 2-0 lead in the first leg at the Emirates, before a well-taken strike from makeshift striker Mikel Merino completed a 3-0 drubbing.

Build-up throughout the week leading up to the second leg was huge, with many hoping for a remontada, the word given to the astonishing comeback Barcelona managed against Paris Saint-Germain years ago. But Carlo Ancelotti's men were unable to follow in the footsteps of their rivals, losing 2-1 on home turf thanks to goals from Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli, a result that handed Arsenal a stunning 5-1 aggregate victory.
