Osasuna set a high goal of winning the La Liga championship

The first phase started in 1920, when the club was founded and received a warm welcome from the fans. After more than 10 years of sticking with lower leagues, Osasuna finally entered the Segunda Division in 1932, before officially joining La Liga in 1935.

The 1985 - 1986 season marked an important turning point when Osasuna achieved a high position in the national rankings, meaning they had tickets to the UEFA Cup. However, then, in the 1993 - 1994 season, they were relegated and played in the Segunda Division.

2005 - 2006 was an impressive season as Osasuna rose to 4th place in La Liga, ensuring them a place in the UEFA Champions League. However, after that success, the 2006 - 2007 season was not so smooth when Osasuna encountered many initial failures.

From 2018 until now, Osasuna has had an impressive return after overcoming two successful promotion seasons, from Segunda Division to La Liga. Currently, with fighting spirit and determination, Osasuna sets a high goal of winning the La Liga championship, a big dream for this team.

Getafe no longer wins but had the merit of avoiding a fourth successive defeat in the league last weekend by snatching a nice point from the draw at Rayo Vallecano 1-1. Before the Christmas break, the Azulones were defeated by Bétis 4-0, a big defeat which followed the losses suffered against Burgos in the 1/16 final of the Copa del Rey 3-1, and in La Liga against Espanyol Barcelona 0-1 and Villarreal 2-0. In the rankings, El Geta occupies 10th place and is gradually losing ground in the top 6 qualifying for Europe. Badly in shape by occupying a sad 15th place with only two small points ahead of Valencia, first-relegation, Real Sociedad was still able to take a good point at home against Atlético Madrid last weekend 1-1 as part of the first poster of 2026.

Basques, away, remain on a parity score at poorly ranked Levante 1-1. In La Liga, they have not won for five days including three defeats in a row against Girona 1-2, Alaves 1-0 and at home for the reception of Villarreal 2-3.

Girona enter this clash with a mixture of optimism and urgency, shaped by a turbulent run of results over the past two months. Their most notable recent outing was the narrow 0‑1 defeat to Alavés in early April, a match that extended a difficult stretch in which they struggled to convert possession into goalsSports Mole. Earlier in the season, however, Girona produced one of their standout performances when they dismantled Osasuna 4‑0 at Montilivi back in late August, with goals from Bryan Gil, Tsygankov, Abel Ruiz and Stuani showcasing their attacking potentialLaLiga+1. The club has also been in the news due to ongoing discussions about squad depth and the need for more consistency as the season’s second half intensifies.

Osasuna, meanwhile, have had their own share of fluctuating form, with recent matches reflecting both resilience and vulnerability. Their 1‑1 draw against Leganés in early April highlighted their ability to stay competitive even when not at their sharpestSports Mole. They also earned attention for their dramatic 2‑1 win over Girona in mid‑April of last season, a match remembered for late goals and a chaotic finishAS USA. Over the past two months, Osasuna’s results have included a mix of draws and narrow defeats, reinforcing the narrative that they remain a difficult side to predict but rarely an easy opponent to break down.

The promotion season is delicate for Real Oviedo which fights for its maintenance every day, but in vain, because of the victory of Levante and its draw last weekend on the turf of Alaves 1-1, Oviedo occupies the last place in the ranking with 12 points. Worse still, this draw on the pitch of Deportivo Alaves continued the series of matches without a victory for the local team, unable to win for 11 days in the league. Before Christmas, the Carbayones had managed to hold Celta Vigo in check 0-0 in the wake of their heavy defeat on the lawn of Sevilla FC 4-0. Faced with Real Madrid last weekend, Bétis thought they would return from the capital with a good result in the absence of Kylian Mbappé, but ultimately, the Andalusian club came up against an iron collective and lost quite easily 5-1. A real slap in the face for a funny formation whether in La Liga 6th and in the Europa League 4th of the league phase.

It should still be mentioned that as soon as they cross swords with members of the top 4, the Verdiblancos crash as was the case against Barcelona defeated 3-5, Atlético Madrid defeated 0-2 or even Athletic Bilbao defeated 1-2. These are, moreover, the only four defeats for Mr. Pellegrini's men this season in all competitions.

As has been the case for several seasons now, Valencia is only playing to maintain itself, and that's what's sad. Despite the changes in coaches, the changes in the game plan, the quality players, nothing changes for the six-time Spanish champion. Following their heavy disappointment at Balaidos last weekend against Celta Vigo 4-1, the Blanquinegros fell to 18th, virtually relegated. That's now 5 successive league titles that Valencia has failed to win. At the end of 2025, the Ché club was held in check by Mallorca 1-1, came out of the woods against Sevilla by equalizing in the money-time 1-1 or even lost in the capital against Atlético Madrid 2-1.

End of series at home for Elche, defeated for the first time of the season at home against Villarreal last weekend 1-3. We therefore had to wait for the first poster of 2026 to see the promoted fall at home after having managed, all the same, to take valuable points against Real Madrid 2-2 or even Bétis at the start of the season 1-1 for example. It's all the more a shame for the Franjiverdes who were left with a nice Christmas present by literally slapping Rayo Vallecano before the winter break 4-0 following their qualification in the 1/8th final of the Copa del Rey via a 0-1 success at Eibar. In the ranking, Elche is still in the top 10, being 9th with 22 points.

3rd with 38 points, Villarreal must win today at home to pass the 40-point mark and come back to within 4 lengths of Real Madrid, runner-up to FC Barcelona. Last weekend, by beating Elche at the Martinez Valero 1-3, Villarreal became the 1st team to beat Elche at home this season and also bounced back from their pre-Christmas loss to Barcelona at home 0-2. Casually, Marcelino's men ended the year 2025 quite badly by losing against Barça, but also against Copenhagen in the Champions League 2-3 and in the 1/16th final of the Copa del Rey against Racing Santander 2-1. For their part, 13th-placed Alaves had a golden opportunity to return to La Liga success and get 2026 off to a strong start when they hosted Real Oviedo last weekend, but were ultimately forced to share the points 1-1.

Before Christmas, the Basques were corrected by Osasuna at El Sadar 3-0 defeat especially as they were already on a defeat before that against Real Madrid at home 1-2. With 19 points, at mid-season, Alaves is only 3 points ahead of the red zone and 9 points from the race for Europe Top 6.

Levante had a great success on the previous day, last weekend, on the pitch of Sevilla FC 0-3. A victory which allows him to leave last place in the ranking, now occupied by Real Oviedo, another promoted. This victory now calls for confirmation for the Granotes who have still not gleaned the slightest success at home this season. Recently, they held Real Sociedad to a draw 1-1, following their 4 successive defeats which occurred when they received Athletic Bilbao 0-2, Celta Vigo 1-2, Rayo Vallecano 0-3 and Real Madrid 1-4. Opposite, Espanyol Barcelona started the year 2026 with a defeat, in the derby against Barça 0-2.

It must be said that his former goalkeeper, Joan Garcia, despite being ridiculed by the Llobregat public, produced an XXL performance repelling a bunch of attacks from the Pericos on the Blaugrana cage. The Catalans still remain in the lead in the race for Europe by being installed in 6th place in the ranking. Note also that this defeat against Barcelona put a stop to a very good dynamic of 5 successes in a row in La Liga. Victories obtained against Athletic Bilbao 1-2, Getafe 0-1, Rayo Vallecano 1-0, Celta Vigo 0-1 and Sevilla FC 2-1.

Rayo Vallecano is sticking its tongue out and it was not the winter break that allowed it to breathe given the poor result conceded at home the previous day against Getafe 1-1. It has now been 8 days since the local players last won in La Liga. The last victory dates back to October 26, it was against Alaves at home 1-0. Before Christmas, Inigo Perez's men did not see the light of day on the lawn of Elche, defeated 4-0. This week, Rayo Vallecano traveled to Andalusia to challenge Granada in the last match of the 1/16 finals of the Copa del Rey, won calmly 1-3. In the standings, Vallecano is only one point ahead of its counterpart and occupies 14th position.

After occupying the first half of the table last season, the situation is very different for RCD Mallorca who were beaten last weekend at home by Girona in a decisive match in the fight for maintenance 1-2. This means that the Mallorcans have only won one of their last 6 matches in the elite. It was at home against Elche 3-1. Away, Jagoba Arrasate's men have not won for 4 days and were even eliminated from the Copa del Rey at the round of 16 stage by La Coruña, defeated 1-0. In the ranking, Mallorca occupies 16th place with 18 small points, only 2 more than the first relegation place.
