Understanding Britain's Online Gambling Market Participation Accounts and Revenue

UK online gambling stats show 38% four-week participation but only 16% excluding lottery-only players. Account numbers and £5.7bn casino GGY reveal different market dimensions.

Online gambling statistics UK

Millions of British adults gamble online, but the industry's headline figures tell different stories. A registered account is not necessarily an active player, and buying a lottery ticket differs from visiting an online casino. The UK Gambling Commission's 2025 survey, published in July 2026, offers a clearer picture of participation, while its latest industry report reveals the money flowing through digital platforms. Together, these figures show how easily the scale of online gambling can be misunderstood.

Online Gambling: Why Payment Options Complicate Market Comparisons

Britain's digital gambling market includes sports betting, casino games, bingo and lotteries. International markets introduce further differences. In Mexico, for example, searches such as online casinos that accept AstroPay in Mexico illustrate how consumers distinguish platforms by payment methods. However, payment availability reveals nothing about the number of individual gamblers.

The same applies to casinos con Paysafecard, another payment-related category. Prepaid solutions, electronic wallets and bank transfers can coexist across gambling platforms. Britain's regulator measures participation separately from transaction methods, preventing multiple deposits or accounts from being mistaken for additional users.

How Many British Adults Actually Gamble Online?

The Gambling Survey for Great Britain 2025 collected responses from 20,775 adults aged 18 and over between January 2025 and January 2026.

Its findings showed that 59% had participated in gambling during the previous 12 months, representing approximately 31 million adults. Over a shorter four-week period, participation reached 47%, equivalent to about 25 million people.

Online participation stood at 38% during those four weeks, compared with 28% for gambling in person.

Yet the distinction involving lotteries changes the picture dramatically. Excluding people who only entered lottery draws, online participation fell to 16%, while in-person participation stood at 17%.

The Difference Between 25.7 Million Accounts and Real Players

The UK Gambling Commission's industry statistics for April 2025 to March 2026 recorded 25.7 million active accounts at remote casino, betting and bingo operators at the end of the final reporting quarter.

That figure measures accounts, not unique individuals. One customer may maintain several accounts with different licensed operators.

During the financial year, operators registered 32.4 million new accounts, 3% fewer than in the preceding year. These registrations also cannot be interpreted as 32.4 million new gamblers.

Customer account balances totalled £886.6 million at the end of the reporting quarter, representing a 13.9% annual decrease. This was money held in accounts, not operator revenue.

Who Gambles Most? Age and Gender Differences

The 2025 survey found that 51% of men and 44% of women had gambled during the preceding four weeks.

Among people aged 55–64, overall participation reached 55%, compared with 33% among adults aged 18–24.

However, excluding lottery-only participants changed the age pattern: adults aged 25–44 recorded the highest participation, at 33%.

Online participation also differed by gender. Approximately 42% of men and 34% of women reported gambling online. Excluding lottery-only participants reduced those figures to 20% and 12%, respectively.

Online Casino Revenue: The £5.7 Billion Market

Britain's remote casino, betting and bingo sector generated £8.3 billion in gross gambling yield (GGY) during the 2025/26 financial year.

Online casinos contributed £5.7 billion, approximately 69% of the combined total.Slots accounted for £4.8 billion of casino revenue, or roughly 84% of the casino segment.

Remote betting produced £2.4 billion, including £1.2 billion from football and £769.3 million from horse racing. Remote bingo contributed another £147.8 million.

GGY represents stakes minus prizes paid, with applicable adjustments. It is not the total amount wagered or the amount of money deposited by customers.

What the Statistics Reveal About Britain's Digital Gambling Market

The latest survey also offers an important comparison with 2024. Four-week gambling participation decreased slightly from 48% to 47%, while the proportion excluding lottery-only participants moved from 28% to 27%.

These figures suggest relative stability rather than a sudden increase in the share of British adults gambling.

The broader picture is therefore more nuanced than account registrations or multibillion-pound revenue headlines suggest. Online casinos represent a substantial commercial market, but participation surveys, account records and financial statistics describe different dimensions of that market. Understanding those distinctions is essential when comparing Britain's gambling industry with international digital platforms.
