The early years of establishment and development of Bologna

Founded in 1909, Bologna is one of the oldest clubs in Italy and one of the founding members of Serie A. Bologna is known by the nickname "Rossoblu" (red and blue), the shown through the colors of their jerseys and logos. Red symbolizes strength and determination, while blue symbolizes hope and loyalty.

The founding of Bologna Football Club was orchestrated by Emilio Arnstein, an Austrian who became interested in football at university in Vienna and Prague. Before that, he and his brother founded another football club, Black Star, in Austria.

In March 1910, Bologna played their first match against Virtus, who wore white shirts. Bologna outscored their opponents, winning 9–1. The first squad to appear; Koch, Chiara, Passarelli, Bragaglia, Guido Della Valle, Nanni, Donati, Rauch, Bernabeu, Mezzano and Gradi

Bologna became Northern and National League champions for the first time in the 1924–25 season, defeating Genoa after five hard-fought final matches to win the title. The final against the Ligurian giants was marred by heavy crowd trouble. A few seasons later, Bologna became Italian champions for a second time in the 1928–29 season, which was the last before Serie A was founded the following year. Bologna has won the Scudetto three times.

During the 1970s, the club won the Italian Cup twice, the second time in a dispute with Palermo. The match was tense and ended 1–1 before going into a penalty shootout, where Bologna won 4–3.

Relegated to Serie B

Bologna and its ambitious players return

Despite losing a number of key players, Bologna were expected to mount a strong challenge for promotion from Serie B in the 2005/2006 campaign. However, despite their ambitions, Bologna had a poor start to the season, leading to the sacking of experienced coach Renzo.

During this time, the team was sold by Giuseppe Gazzoni Frascara to Alfredo Cazzola a local businessman. However, Mandorlini was unable to get Bologna up the Serie B table and was sacked in March 2006. Bologna finished the 2005/2006 Serie B season in eighth place. In the 2006/2007 season, Bologna finished in seventh place. There were several clashes between president Cazzola and head coach Ulivieri, who was eventually sacked in April 2007 and replaced by caretaker. and former assistant coach Luca Cecconi. In the 2007/2008 season, Bologna was coached by Daniele Arrigoni who helped the rossoblu achieve automatic promotion back to the top flight after finishing second in Serie B.

Promoted back to Serie A

Bologna can be considered a phenomenon in Serie A

In the summer of 2008, Cazzola and a US-based consortium agreed to take over the club. Arrigoni has been confirmed as head coach by the new team and has looked particularly impressive with a surprise 2-1 win at the San Siro against Milan thanks to Francesco Valiani's winning goal. However, the following weeks saw Bologna struggle in the table with 8 losses in 9 matches. A disappointing 5–1 loss to Cagliari eventually led the club's board to sack Daniele Arrigoni in November 2008 and appoint Siniša Mihajlović as the new boss of the rossoblu.

In April 2009, Giuseppe Papadopulo was appointed as the new coach and succeeded in raising team spirit, avoiding relegation to Serie B in just the last match of the season. In 2009, Bologna played in Serie A for the 65th time, and again escaped relegation despite financial problems under new head coach Franco Colomba.

In June 2010, the takeover of the club was completed with the club being sold by the Menarini family to Sardinian businessman Sergio Porcedda. Franco Colomba was sacked just before the opening match of the 2010/2011 season despite remaining with the team in the 2009/2010 season.
