In the last few years, many rules have been introduced before the IPL season. Last year, the introduction of the impact player rule was successful as teams got the benefit of bringing in a player in the middle of the match to strengthen their team. This year, the Impact Player rules have been retained and some new rules have been added.

Smart replay system

'Smart Replay System' is a new camera-based review system. Which has been introduced with the aim of making decisions faster, more efficient and more accurate. This will be done with the help of a new high-speed camera setup, which will be located at various locations around the stadium. Eight high-speed Hawk-Eye cameras will be installed around the ground.

Earlier, the TV broadcast director used to act as an intermediary between the Hawk-Eye operators and the third umpire. However, in the new system the TV umpire will get the views directly from the operator. Spectators will also benefit from the smart replay system during DRS calls as they will be aware of what decision has been taken and the reason behind it.

Second bouncer rule

This rule is simpler. Fans who watched the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy last season will be used to this rule as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) tested it during the tournament. To create a balance between bat and ball, bowlers will be allowed to bowl two bouncers in an over to keep the batsmen guessing. This change will certainly be welcomed with open arms by the bowlers, who were allowed to bowl only one bouncer in an over in the last IPL season.

Two Bouncers Per Over: Bowlers are limited to two short-pitched deliveries per over that pass or could pass above the batter's shoulder.

Wides and No Balls: Deliveries above the batter's head that prevent a normal shot are called wides and count towards the bouncer limit. Exceeding the limit results in no balls.

Warnings and Suspension: Bowlers exceeding the bouncer limit will be cautioned, receive a final warning, and then be suspended from bowling for the innings.

Over Completion: A suspended bowler's over will be completed by another bowler.

Match Referee Reporting: The umpire may report incidents to the IPL Match Referee for further action against the bowler.

Stop rule did not find place.

Meanwhile, the rule of examining catches when referred for stumping will continue in this season as well. However, the stop clock rule, which the ICC is set to implement for white-ball international matches from the T20 World Cup 2024, has not found a place in IPL 2024.
