NBA News and Predictions

Roughly a month into the newest edition of the NBA season and already there are plenty of storylines that fans need to know about. While it may have seemed like we got everything figured out before the start, many of the early predictions fell through as some rather unexpected developments took place. Injuries are already piling up, expected contenders are struggling, and there is an overall feeling of uncertainty and unfamiliarity because of these unexpected factors. One thing is certain: it is still rather exciting to see the best of the best go at it night in and night out.

Because of all this, it is not easy for someone deeply invested in the best that basketball has to offer. No longer can you watch a game and know full well who is taking it before it actually finishes. Anything can happen and a bunch of stuff is happening. So how can an average fan of the NBA, or more importantly, an online sports betting enthusiast, prepare for a full slate of games? Is it possible to do enough research and should you trust the odds the bookies make? To these and other questions, we give answers in the following guide. Read on if you love basketball for the newest news, speculations, and predictions.

Struggling Playoff Teams

Two of the bigger stories deal with teams that were expected to make early pushes for the top of the standings and eventually make a deep playoff run. These are mainly the Philadelphia 76ers and the Milwaukee Bucks. Considering the names in their ranks and their past success, one of them more so than the other, they should be good for most of the season, right? Well, it seems like that will not be the case this season. It is already looking very bad for them and we have barely scratched the surface.

Let us start with Philly. The City of Brotherly Love has been Trusting the Process for years now, but alas, it was to no avail. After numerous disappointments and experiments with stars past their prime, Joel Embiid somehow won an MVP and everyone’s spirits were high. Then, of course, his injuries continued as he was still unable to finish a season and take the team past the second round. Now, he has yet to play a single game this season. He was involved in two controversies already.

First, he said that if it were up to him, he would never play in back-to-back games until the end of his career. For this, the league launched an investigation into Philadelphia’s conducting of player absences. Then, the shoved a reporter in the locker room and got suspended for three games. And all of this after missing the first few games due to injury. It cannot get any worse, can it? Well, Tyrese Maxey is out for several weeks with a hamstring injury and Paul George is a bit rusty after missing the first several games of the season. All in all, the 76ers are one of the worst teams right now with a 1-7 record and dead last in the Eastern Conference. Betting against them would not be a bad idea going forward.

Right above them with an abysmal 2-7 record are the Milwaukee Bucks, who, compared to Philly, are not struggling with any drama or major injuries to their stars. Sure, Khris Middleton is absent still and is yet to appear this season, but they are used to it by now. Their struggles come from a few other places. First off, it does seem like Doc Rivers is the greatest fraud in NBA coaching in the last 20 years. Since he took over, everything has gone downhill. Losing Jrue Holiday and getting Damian Lillard proved like a mistake as the team is struggling mightily on the defensive end and the duo of Giannis Antetokiunpo and Lillard cannot carry the entire offense on their own. If one of them misses a game, it is a definite loss, and they do tend to miss a game from time to time.

The lack of help from the bench as well as the remainder of the starting five is simply not enough to compete in the East right now. Other teams are younger, faster, and more talented, while the Bucks are the oldest team in the league with an average age of 30.4 years. All you need to know about their roster struggles is the fact that they are playing a 36-year-old Brook Lopez for 30 minutes a game. There is no end in sight to their struggles and Giannis constantly appears in trade rumors. It would be one of the biggest shakeups in the history of the league if or when the Bucks make a move. This cannot go on for much longer as frustration is already at a peak.

Cavaliers are for Real

On the opposite end of the spectrum are the incredible Cleveland Cavaliers who have run out of the gate to start the season and kept on sprinting. Throw a hurdle at them and they will clear it by a mile. Nothing seems to be phasing them as they opened the new campaign with a 10-0 and it seems like there is no end in sight to their amazing stretch. This is the best start in franchise history, and we are talking about a team that is synonymous with LeBron James. At the moment, Stake gives them the odds of 19.00 to take the title, with 7 other teams in front. Capitalizing now would be an amazing wagering foresight and they could very well do it.

Donovan Mitchel
~Donovan Mitchel

Donovan Mitchel and Darius Garland are leading the backcourt while the twin towers of Evan Mobley and Jarret Allen are anchoring the post. Such a combination of size and speed, offense and defense, is not present in many other teams. Add a constant threat from beyond the arc from the likes of Max Strus, Caris LeVert, Sam Merrill, and Isaac Okoro, and you have a well-rounded team poised for greatness. Betting on the Cavs is one of the surest things in basketball right now so be sure to ride the wave until it lasts. It is a good time once again to be an NBA fan in Cleveland.

Phoenix, Thunder, Celtics on a Roll

This assortment of contenders is doing their thing to open the season as all three teams are great right now. The Phoenix Suns are atop the Western Conference with an 8-1 record, same as the second-best Oklahoma City Thunder. Kevin Durant, Devin Booker, and Jusuf Nurkic are leading the way as the team is winning games, both close and lopsided, and finally playing well together. The chemistry of OKC is unmatched and it is just so good to watch the guys interact with each other and play so well together. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Chet Holmgren are leading the way and their supporting cast is unlike anything else in the league. They could be ready for that final push come playoff time.

In the East, right under the mighty Cavs is the defending champion, the Boston Celtics. With the odds to take another title and cement the dynasty being 3.60, they are still the bookies’ favorites. However, many teams are off to an amazing start and could ruin their best chance at a repeat in almost 4 decades. Jason Tatum is playing like an MVP, again, and several guys are coming into their own, especially Payton Pritchard. With Jaylen Brown and Kristaps Porzingis down with injuries, the Cs have not yet taken out their best starting five onto the court this season. It is a scary thought to have but there is no saying how good they will be when the gears start turning midway through the season.

Numerous Early MVP Candidates

After the first two weeks, the MVP battle looked nothing like we expected it to. Some names appeared there that no sane person would think of. For example, two Clippers players are incredible right now, but none of them are named James Harden or Kawhi Leonard. It is Norman Powell and Ivica Zubac who have been carrying the load and are the main contributors to the positive 5-4 record of a team who were supposed to be where the Bucks and Philly are right now. Zubac is averaging 16.7 points and 12.8 rebounds while Powell is playing out of his mind with 25.7 points per game.

The Sacramento Kings hoped for a better start than their current 5-4 record, but there is a lot to be optimistic about right now. They have three players averaging more than 20 points per game. De’Aron Fox is leading the way with 24.6 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 4.6 assists. DeMar DeRozan is currently at 24.2 points, 3.7 rebounds, and 4.1 assists per game. Domantas Sabonis is averaging 20.6 points, 13 rebounds, and 7.1 assists per game and has already had several triple-doubles.

Speaking of the Lithuanian superstar, he has had one of the best games in history, a perfect game as many called it. In their November 6 win over the Toronto Raptors, he did something nobody else has. Pay attention. He had a triple-double with 17 points, 11 rebounds, and 13 assists. He added 1 steal to it. But the great thing about it is that he shot 100% from the floor, 6/6, 100% from the free throw, 5/5, and did not have a single foul or turnover! Such a game is unheard of and it is a testament to how the new, non-American players (Jokic, Sabonis, Giannis, Luka, Shai) are changing the game.

The Los Angeles Lakers are currently in the 7th spot with a 5-4 record after opening the season in big fashion. With big stories surrounding them, none bigger than Bronny James and the new coaching staff led by JJ Reddick, they are handling the business well enough. LeBron James says he plans to play all 82 games this season, something he has only done once in his 22-year-long career. That is promising as the team needs all he can give them, and he is delivering amazingly well for a soon-to-be 40-year-old.

However, it is Anthony Davis who is leading the way and making an early push for the MVP. The 31-year-old is currently averaging 32.4 points, 11.3 rebounds, 2.8 assists, 1.4 steals, and 2 blocks per game on 57% shooting. These are MVP numbers and should he be able to play enough games, it could be his year. He is also delivering on the defensive end so it could be a battle between him and Victor Wembanyama for the Defensive Player of the Year Award.

Sacramento Kings
Sacramento Kings
Seventh in the Western Conference with a solid record of 19 wins - 14 defeats, the thickness of which is increasingly visible after numerous successes, Booker's Phoenix is the very big surprise of the Western Conference. For a team that lost 2 of its 3 best players, doing better, much better, than the previous year was unexpected. On the courts, Phoenix 4 consecutive successes were away 48 hours ago at the Cavaliers, but corrected with a score of 129-113. The Sacramento Kings are in the right tank tank. Nothing very coherent from a basketball point of view for a franchise which is paying for its very rotten choice to bring LaVine and DeRozan under the same banner when it had already not worked with the Bulls. After a surprising success at home on Sunday, December 27, Sacramento fell 3 times in a row to the Los Angeles Lakers 125-101, the Los Angeles Clippers 131-90 to follow with another very generous defeat to the Boston Celtics 106-120.

Oklahoma City Thunder
Oklahoma City Thunder
The Golden State Warriors 8th, 18 wins - 16 losses are having a tricky season to say the least because expectations were very high after 3 months with Butler arriving last February. Indeed, under his leadership, Golden State played in a conference semi-final lost against the Wolves. For now, the Warriors are returning from a small, conclusive road trip in the Eastern Conference during which they took the measure of Brooklyn 120-107 and Charlotte 125-132, but first beaten by the Raptors 141-127. Has the status of the OKC Thunder really changed since the 3 consecutive defeats against the Spurs? Yes and no. Yes because now we know the Kryptonite of the Thunder, and everyone has seen the few weaknesses present in this squad. Also because the gap has narrowed with the competition and this top 6 in the West. No because the Thunder were certainly warned, but are doing very well like the 3 consecutive successes collected by the franchise in front of the 76ers 129-104, Hawks 140-129 and Blazers 124-95.

Memphis Grizzlies
The Los Angeles Lakers 5th, 20 wins - 10 losses are engaged in a fierce fight between several franchises fighting for the best spots in the top 6 of the Western Conference, directly qualifying for the Play-offs, remember. For now with 6 defeats in the last 10 games they are losing a lot of ground, again massacred by the Detroit Pistons 106-128 in their last match. Los Angeles must resume its march forward, or change things, as is regularly mentioned to the extent that Doncic and Reaves step on each other a little. They will certainly bite their fingers because the Memphis Grizzlies in full redemption have achieved the incredible feat of restarting on the floors, the worst thing in the NBA, namely the Washington Wizards. against whom they lost the first time on December 21 122-130 and a second time in DC with the more flattering score of 116-112. The Memphis Grizzlies knew they were waiting for the reception of the 76ers in a match in which they sank at the end of the game 136-139 at home.

Orlando Magic
Still in discussions to make a top 10 in the Eastern Conference, Chicago probably did not expect to start its 2026 year with a record of 16 wins - 17 losses but the cohesion that coach Donovan is finding for the moment is good. Led by its Giddey-Vucevic-White trio, Windy City occupies 9th place in the Eastern Conference, defeated twice in a row against the Milwaukee Bucks 103-112 and Minnesota Timberwolves 101-136, before rebounding 48 hours ago at home against the Pelicans 134-118. The Orlando Magic 6th 19 wins - 15 losses is significantly behind the top 4 places currently in the Eastern Conference. For them, however, it was not on the agenda to see them so low. Orlando validated its ticket twice in the Play-offs during the previous 2 years 2024 and 2025, considering that F.Wagner and P.Banchero have gained experience, and the contribution of Bane, this team should find itself higher in the ranking. Still in pain, the Magic got the better of the Pacers, the worst record in the NBA, with a score of 110-112 48 hours ago in the Crossroads of America.

Portland Trailblazers
Portland Trailblazers
By winning 4 games in a row in front of the Portland Trail Blazers 143-120 to start, Chicago Bulls 104-114 in a second phase, then in front of Kevin Durant's Houston Rockets 133-128, and Indiana 128-109, New Orleans made us want to believe it, to dream. Well that said, we didn't dream for very long, don't worry. The Pelicans quickly returned to the path of defeat by losing no less than 5 games in a row to the Suns twice 108-115, 114-123, and recently to the Bulls who were deprived of White and Giddey. The Portland Trail Blazers, to draw a little parallel, a little analogy with our friends the Pelicans, were generally expected in the same waters, in the same areas. Moreover, the handicap was certain for the Oregon players due to the injury for the season of Lillard, plus the very long absences of Holiday and Henderson. And yet, Portland is incredible, still in the game, 10th with a record of 14 wins for 20 losses after however an ugly setback against the Thunder 124-95 48 hours ago.

Charlotte Bobcats
Giannis made a triumphant return to a franchise in ruins after its defeat by winning the two matches he played against Chicago 103-112 and Charlotte 113-123. However, there is concern among the Bucks, beaten at home in front of the Wizards 113-114 48 hours ago before negotiating a very busy schedule. Because after the reception of Charlotte, the team goes on a road trip to challenge Sacramento, Golden State, LA Lakers, Denver, receives the Wolves then leaves to face the Spurs and the Hawks before receiving the Thunder, the Nuggets and the Mavs. The future of the Bucks is very dark, they are already in 11th place, 14 wins - 20 losses, the next matches will be decisive for the future of Giannis. The Charlotte Hornets are indeed in a similar configuration, but on the contrary in comparison with the Bucks, a place in Play-in would be an accomplishment. A perfectly plausible place in the top 10 for the Hornets finally complete. Charlotte before losing its last 2 games against the Warriors 125-132 and Bucks 113-123 remained on two successes in front of the Wizards 126-109, for a huge win on the road at the Orlando Magic with a score of 105-120.

Atlanta Hawks
The New York Knicks 2nd in the East, 23 wins - 10 losses missed the boat in their attempt to seize 1st place in the Eastern Conference standings. Indeed, Jalen Brunson's partners, recent winners of the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA Cup final 124-113, were traveling to Texas for revenge against a franchise that has been almost invincible since this defeat. In this fierce battle between the two second-placed conference teams, it was New York who lost the lead with a score of 134-132, not taking advantage of leader Detroit's defeat last night against the Heat. The Atlanta Hawks remained on no less than 7 consecutive defeats in the NBA against the Hornets, notably 133-126 to start this black series, twice against the Bulls 150-152 and 123-126, the Heat 111-126, the Knicks 125-128 and Thunder 140-129. The situation was urgent 48 hours ago when we received the Timberwolves in great shape. But ultimately with courage, and with a good dose of intensity, Atlanta got the better of the Wolves before winning the game by a wide margin 126-102.

Denver Nuggets
Denver Nuggets
This is a team from Cleveland 8th, 19 wins - 16 losses whose level of play has not necessarily faltered. The starting 5 has not changed, however on the bench there were numerous losses during the summer offseason like Ty Jérome and Isac Okoro, and plus the few injuries during the first weeks which disrupted the balance of the franchise. Without getting too carried away we can say that Cleveland is doing a little better, winner of an accomplished match at the Spurs 101-113 in the middle of the week to follow up with a demonstration in front of the Suns 129-113, however monstrous.  At the Denver Nuggets, things will get seriously complicated in the absence of Nikola Jokic. If the Serb has probably avoided the worst, he will be absent from the starting 5 for 4 weeks. In such circumstances, one would tend to think that Denver could hold on without its best player as the quality of the squad no longer needs to be proven. Except that right now in the infirmary, you also find Gordon, Braun, Johnson, Valenciunas recently and even Murray uncertain. However Denver won its first game without Jokic in Toronto 103-106, but Murray was there.

Brooklyn Nets
Always the same problems, always the same problems, the same uncertainties, but let's focus on the little progress made by the Washington Wizards recently, winners of 3 of their last 4 games. Indeed, let's forget for a moment this mediocre 14th ranking, this unflattering record 8 wins - 24 losses, and let's stay focused on this success in front of Toronto at home 138-117, this domination against the Grizzlies 116-112, this victory acquired 48 hours ago in front of the Bucks at the last second thanks to CJ McCollum 113-114. After a period during which the Brooklyn Nets had followed a few successes in the NBA like a spectacular success against the Wolves 107-121 on Sunday December 28, Brooklyn finally fell back into its faults during the last 2 games. Because indeed, if a defeat in the middle of the week is nothing too bad against the superior Warriors, the latter were back-to-back after an overtime lost in Toronto. Defeat 107-120, followed by that against the Houston Rockets 96-120.

San Antonio Spurs
The Indiana Pacers 6 wins - 28 wins occupy last place in the Eastern Conference, it is also the worst record in the entire league among the 30 franchises present, the only franchise with only 6 wins when the Wizards have two more. Indiana recently lost its 10th consecutive NBA game 48 hours ago at home. Indeed, Pascal Siakam and his friends hosted the Orlando Magic against whom they surrendered with a score of 110-112. “Wemby” and his gang after beating the OKC Thunder 3 times, however, lost their means against the modest formation of the Utah Jazz with a score of 114-127 and finally against the Cleveland Cavaliers 101-113, although not at their best. You will have understood, these two defeats were difficult to digest for the 2nd in the Western Conference before hosting the best team in the East on paper and on the floor, New York, but San Antonio, after a magnificent performance, put in a very big match to win 134-132.

Refresh

So what about some immediate games and the newest NBA sports betting odds? We have you covered. This weekend is full of great games, particularly on Sunday. The Suns are playing the Kings in a great Western Conference duel. Considering their current form and how well the team is playing together, the Suns’ odds of 1.46 make sense over the Kings’ 2.80. The over/under is 227.5 and should be a great over (1.77) to play as both teams have some heavy hitters on their rosters. Among Durant, Booker, and Beal on one side and Fox, DeRozan, and Sabonis on the other, it should be an easy win.

The struggling Bucks are playing the Celtics in what was supposed to be an Eastern Conference clash of contenders. However, it is not guaranteed due to the current form of the Milwaukee team. Still, Giannis and Lillard have a lot to prove and could actually come on top. Tatum is the lone star as his team is incomplete, hence the 1.80 odds for the Celtics and the 2.06 odds for the Bucks. This may be the game that turns it around for the Wisconsin team.

Who doesn’t like when the New York Knicks are good? It is simply great for the league and the sport! They are the favorites in their upcoming clash with the Indiana Pacers as the trades proved successful. Jalen Brunson, Karl-Anthony Towns, and Mikal Bridges on one side, and Pascal Siakam, Tyrese Haliburton, and Myles Turner are more than enough to get you the 1.77 over on the 226.5 threshold. As for the winner, the Knicks should take it. The bookies predict it and give them 1.81 over the Pacers’ 2.05.
