NBA News and Predictions

Roughly a month into the newest edition of the NBA season and already there are plenty of storylines that fans need to know about. While it may have seemed like we got everything figured out before the start, many of the early predictions fell through as some rather unexpected developments took place. Injuries are already piling up, expected contenders are struggling, and there is an overall feeling of uncertainty and unfamiliarity because of these unexpected factors. One thing is certain: it is still rather exciting to see the best of the best go at it night in and night out.

Because of all this, it is not easy for someone deeply invested in the best that basketball has to offer. No longer can you watch a game and know full well who is taking it before it actually finishes. Anything can happen and a bunch of stuff is happening. So how can an average fan of the NBA, or more importantly, an online sports betting enthusiast, prepare for a full slate of games? Is it possible to do enough research and should you trust the odds the bookies make? To these and other questions, we give answers in the following guide. Read on if you love basketball for the newest news, speculations, and predictions.

Struggling Playoff Teams

Two of the bigger stories deal with teams that were expected to make early pushes for the top of the standings and eventually make a deep playoff run. These are mainly the Philadelphia 76ers and the Milwaukee Bucks. Considering the names in their ranks and their past success, one of them more so than the other, they should be good for most of the season, right? Well, it seems like that will not be the case this season. It is already looking very bad for them and we have barely scratched the surface.

Let us start with Philly. The City of Brotherly Love has been Trusting the Process for years now, but alas, it was to no avail. After numerous disappointments and experiments with stars past their prime, Joel Embiid somehow won an MVP and everyone’s spirits were high. Then, of course, his injuries continued as he was still unable to finish a season and take the team past the second round. Now, he has yet to play a single game this season. He was involved in two controversies already.

First, he said that if it were up to him, he would never play in back-to-back games until the end of his career. For this, the league launched an investigation into Philadelphia’s conducting of player absences. Then, the shoved a reporter in the locker room and got suspended for three games. And all of this after missing the first few games due to injury. It cannot get any worse, can it? Well, Tyrese Maxey is out for several weeks with a hamstring injury and Paul George is a bit rusty after missing the first several games of the season. All in all, the 76ers are one of the worst teams right now with a 1-7 record and dead last in the Eastern Conference. Betting against them would not be a bad idea going forward.

Right above them with an abysmal 2-7 record are the Milwaukee Bucks, who, compared to Philly, are not struggling with any drama or major injuries to their stars. Sure, Khris Middleton is absent still and is yet to appear this season, but they are used to it by now. Their struggles come from a few other places. First off, it does seem like Doc Rivers is the greatest fraud in NBA coaching in the last 20 years. Since he took over, everything has gone downhill. Losing Jrue Holiday and getting Damian Lillard proved like a mistake as the team is struggling mightily on the defensive end and the duo of Giannis Antetokiunpo and Lillard cannot carry the entire offense on their own. If one of them misses a game, it is a definite loss, and they do tend to miss a game from time to time.

The lack of help from the bench as well as the remainder of the starting five is simply not enough to compete in the East right now. Other teams are younger, faster, and more talented, while the Bucks are the oldest team in the league with an average age of 30.4 years. All you need to know about their roster struggles is the fact that they are playing a 36-year-old Brook Lopez for 30 minutes a game. There is no end in sight to their struggles and Giannis constantly appears in trade rumors. It would be one of the biggest shakeups in the history of the league if or when the Bucks make a move. This cannot go on for much longer as frustration is already at a peak.

Cavaliers are for Real

On the opposite end of the spectrum are the incredible Cleveland Cavaliers who have run out of the gate to start the season and kept on sprinting. Throw a hurdle at them and they will clear it by a mile. Nothing seems to be phasing them as they opened the new campaign with a 10-0 and it seems like there is no end in sight to their amazing stretch. This is the best start in franchise history, and we are talking about a team that is synonymous with LeBron James. At the moment, Stake gives them the odds of 19.00 to take the title, with 7 other teams in front. Capitalizing now would be an amazing wagering foresight and they could very well do it.

Donovan Mitchel
~Donovan Mitchel

Donovan Mitchel and Darius Garland are leading the backcourt while the twin towers of Evan Mobley and Jarret Allen are anchoring the post. Such a combination of size and speed, offense and defense, is not present in many other teams. Add a constant threat from beyond the arc from the likes of Max Strus, Caris LeVert, Sam Merrill, and Isaac Okoro, and you have a well-rounded team poised for greatness. Betting on the Cavs is one of the surest things in basketball right now so be sure to ride the wave until it lasts. It is a good time once again to be an NBA fan in Cleveland.

Phoenix, Thunder, Celtics on a Roll

This assortment of contenders is doing their thing to open the season as all three teams are great right now. The Phoenix Suns are atop the Western Conference with an 8-1 record, same as the second-best Oklahoma City Thunder. Kevin Durant, Devin Booker, and Jusuf Nurkic are leading the way as the team is winning games, both close and lopsided, and finally playing well together. The chemistry of OKC is unmatched and it is just so good to watch the guys interact with each other and play so well together. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Chet Holmgren are leading the way and their supporting cast is unlike anything else in the league. They could be ready for that final push come playoff time.

In the East, right under the mighty Cavs is the defending champion, the Boston Celtics. With the odds to take another title and cement the dynasty being 3.60, they are still the bookies’ favorites. However, many teams are off to an amazing start and could ruin their best chance at a repeat in almost 4 decades. Jason Tatum is playing like an MVP, again, and several guys are coming into their own, especially Payton Pritchard. With Jaylen Brown and Kristaps Porzingis down with injuries, the Cs have not yet taken out their best starting five onto the court this season. It is a scary thought to have but there is no saying how good they will be when the gears start turning midway through the season.

Numerous Early MVP Candidates

After the first two weeks, the MVP battle looked nothing like we expected it to. Some names appeared there that no sane person would think of. For example, two Clippers players are incredible right now, but none of them are named James Harden or Kawhi Leonard. It is Norman Powell and Ivica Zubac who have been carrying the load and are the main contributors to the positive 5-4 record of a team who were supposed to be where the Bucks and Philly are right now. Zubac is averaging 16.7 points and 12.8 rebounds while Powell is playing out of his mind with 25.7 points per game.

The Sacramento Kings hoped for a better start than their current 5-4 record, but there is a lot to be optimistic about right now. They have three players averaging more than 20 points per game. De’Aron Fox is leading the way with 24.6 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 4.6 assists. DeMar DeRozan is currently at 24.2 points, 3.7 rebounds, and 4.1 assists per game. Domantas Sabonis is averaging 20.6 points, 13 rebounds, and 7.1 assists per game and has already had several triple-doubles.

Speaking of the Lithuanian superstar, he has had one of the best games in history, a perfect game as many called it. In their November 6 win over the Toronto Raptors, he did something nobody else has. Pay attention. He had a triple-double with 17 points, 11 rebounds, and 13 assists. He added 1 steal to it. But the great thing about it is that he shot 100% from the floor, 6/6, 100% from the free throw, 5/5, and did not have a single foul or turnover! Such a game is unheard of and it is a testament to how the new, non-American players (Jokic, Sabonis, Giannis, Luka, Shai) are changing the game.

The Los Angeles Lakers are currently in the 7th spot with a 5-4 record after opening the season in big fashion. With big stories surrounding them, none bigger than Bronny James and the new coaching staff led by JJ Reddick, they are handling the business well enough. LeBron James says he plans to play all 82 games this season, something he has only done once in his 22-year-long career. That is promising as the team needs all he can give them, and he is delivering amazingly well for a soon-to-be 40-year-old.

However, it is Anthony Davis who is leading the way and making an early push for the MVP. The 31-year-old is currently averaging 32.4 points, 11.3 rebounds, 2.8 assists, 1.4 steals, and 2 blocks per game on 57% shooting. These are MVP numbers and should he be able to play enough games, it could be his year. He is also delivering on the defensive end so it could be a battle between him and Victor Wembanyama for the Defensive Player of the Year Award.

Cleveland Cavaliers
Cleveland Cavaliers
Each franchise in the NBA has its share of problems, its doubts, and its own way of moving forward. For the 76ers the approach is even a little more delicate in that the best player is often disrupted by injuries. Keep it? Sell it? Keep it to leave Maxey with an average of 30 pts? Questions to which Philadelphia will have to find answers quite quickly nevertheless, winner of 3 of its last 4 games ahead of the Wizards 131-110, Orlando Magic 91-103 and the Toronto Raptors 102-115. Opposite the Cleveland Cavaliers 7th in the Eastern Conference with a record of 22 wins and 19 losses are very average compared to last season. Afterwards, as we tend to repeat here, this team will be expected at the turn in the Play-offs, and not in the regular season. Last year, for example, Minnesota played in the final, finishing in 6th place in the Eastern Conference. However, finding a semblance of regularity seems essential for a Cleveland team still beaten by the Utah Jazz 13th in the West 112-123 48 hours ago.

Toronto Raptors
Indiana 15th in the conference, co-worst record in the league, can it play in the Play-offs? The question is interesting because as you know, Indiana is not an average 15th conference. He is the reigning Eastern Conference champion, whose interest in tanking is zero with at his head the legendary Rick Carlisle, champion with the Mavericks in 2011 in front of LeBron's Miami Heat. This question is asked blankly for good reason, because Indiana has just won 3 consecutive games for the first time this season ahead of Charlotte 112-114, Miami 123-99 and Boston 98-96. The Toronto Raptors 4th, 24 wins - 17 losses are having a perfect season. This is the big surprise this year in the East behind the 1st place Detroit Pistons. Although the T-Rex has lost some scales in recent weeks with the losses of certain captains, consistency remains the priority, with 4 wins in 6 matches. However, after a strong success in front of the 76ers at home in Game 1 between the two franchises 116-115, Toronto lost the return 102-115 for the return of Jo Embiid.

Utah Jazz
The Chicago Bulls 10th in the East, 18 wins - 21 losses were on the road last night to challenge the Houston Rockets, beaten 3 times in a row, or with a 24% long distance success rate in their last 5 games. A clash against a team in crisis against which the match was decided on details like a very close score of 103-104 for the Bulls 4 minutes from the end of the match, and 105-106 still in favor of the Bulls 1 minute later. However, the talent of the Rockets will make all the difference in the money-time 119-113 in front of a Bulls team without White and now it's up to a Jazz team 13th in the Western Conference 14 wins - 25 losses. The results are positive for a franchise whose goal is to change things, build around young K.George, but Markkanen should not be part of the project in the short term. The Utah Jazz 13th in the Western Conference was in doubt before negotiating its 5-game road trip on the road after a heavy setback against the Hornets 95-150, but the reaction against the Cleveland Cavaliers was perfect with a 112-123 success.

The Dallas Mavericks 12th, 15 wins - 25 losses learned the news like us last night, namely: Anthony Davis on the floor for the remainder of the regular season. This will be operated on the hand and several deals to exchange it are being studied in the Dallas Mavericks offices. Dallas won its match against the Brooklyn Nets 113-105 48 hours ago but how can we imagine Dallas in the Play-offs? A Dallas deprived of Davis, and even if the return of K.Irving will take place, Dallas will inevitably think about tanking in such conditions. Where is the point in playing in the Play-offs? It's remarkable what Denver produces with a group totally diminished by the absences of Jokic, Johnson, regularly Murray and Gordon recently returned. A diminished team, a busy schedule, but Denver still conquering, winner of 4 of its last 5 games in the NBA without Nikola Jokic and Cameron Johnson, let's remember again. Firstly in front of the 76ers 124-125 in Pennsylvania, Boston in the TD Garden 110-114, in front of the Bucks for the return in Colorado 108-104 and finally against the NOLA Pelicans last night 116-122.

Brooklyn Nets
From the start of the season after the injury to Murray, 2nd best player, Zion still subject to weight problems, plus the losses last year of Ingram and McCollum last winter, it was much too hard to take for the Pelicans now in possession of the co-worst record in the league with only 9 wins since the restart. Beaten 11 times in the last 12 games, Zion's teammates during this series had beaten the Wizards last weekend in the Capital 107-128 but beaten yesterday in front of an ultra-diminished Denver 116-122. The Brooklyn Nets 13th, 11 wins - 26 losses have lost their last 4 games in the NBA. A series which began on January 8 during a trip to the Orlando Magic 103-104, before seeing the Clippers largely dominate Cam Thomas' partners 105-121, for a narrow defeat in which the Nets lost the lead against the Memphis Grizzlies by conceding a fatal 13-0 in the final moments of the game. Brooklyn to finish 48 hours back fell to the Mavericks 113-105.

New York Knicks
The Sacramento Kings, 14th in the Western Conference with a record of 10 wins - 30 losses, have just won two very interesting matches. Yes, the Kings can win, and win in style. The top 6 Rockets in West Houston witnessed the solidity of the Sacramento Kings over the weekend, losing 111-98. An isolated victory? Not really, because behind the Kings raised the slider to knock down the Lakers of LeBron James and Luka Doncic 124-112 among the best NBA teams on the road. As Jacques Monclar recently said in Bein Sport recently, "New York cannot hide this year". He is 100% right. How can we not aim for the NBA title with such a starting 5, and a bench that has become monstrous. In the current situation of this Eastern Conference, New York does not have the right for a single second not to win the conference title. Moreover, when Thibodeau was fired last year after a setback in the Eastern Conference final, it says a lot about the slider, and the level of demands of the Knicks version 2025-26, winner this year of the NBA Cup. Traveling Monday against the seriously diminished Blazers, the Knicks won 114-123.

Washington Wizards
Winners 10 of their last 12 games in the NBA, James Harden's teammates are in the right car, ready to dominate, and get back into the race for the Play-offs. At this rate we wonder where these Clippers 11th in the West will be able to stop. On December 24, when Houston passed 128-108 for a second-rate team, Los Angeles then put together big performances, victorious over the Detroit Pistons 92-98 last Sunday, and dominating against the Charlotte Hornets last Monday 117-109. We didn't really believe it. But the dynamic started a few weeks ago with the Wizards 14th, 10 victories - 28 defeats was rather very interesting in the image of 5 successes in 7 matches. But the Wizards unfortunately did not keep up the pace, but it was especially the Young/McCollum-Kispert trade that killed Washington in its tracks. Indeed, McCollum was able to play when T.Young was still recovering. It was enough to disrupt the weak balance of Washington beaten in front of the 76ers 131-110, the Pelicans 107-128 and the Suns 112-93.

Portland Trailblazers
The Golden State Warriors 8th, 21 wins - 19 losses are still not making enough progress at a time when the top 7 of the Western Conference is distancing itself like Houston 7th, 22 wins - 14 losses. A lot of things are not going well at the moment with the Dubs, like the ultimately not-so-great understanding between Curry and Butler. Steve Kerr's men started the week very badly, losing at home to the Atlanta Hawks with a score of 111-124, after two victories on their floor against Milwaukee and Sacramento. The Portland Trail Blazers 9th in the Western Conference, 19 wins - 21 losses are still on track for the Play-in. Things seem to be going in the right direction to the extent that the Pelicans 15th and the Kings 14th have soon given up on the Jazz 13th, when Dallas 12th has just lost Davis for a long time. Less and less competition for the Blazers therefore in the framework of the Play-in, although the Clippers 11th and the Grizzlies 10th have the weapons to overthrow a Portland team beaten 114-123 in front of the NY Knicks in its last match. A defeat ending a series of 5 consecutive successes.

Atlanta Hawks
The Los Angeles Lakers are in danger. A. Reaves' injury just a year ago might not have changed anything except that the kid has improved considerably to the point of scoring between 26 and 27 points on average per game. His injury caused the incredible poor form of the Los Angeles Lakers immediately, falling to 5th place. The Lakers of James and Doncic lost last night against the Kings 14th 124-112, after two previous losses against the Bucks 101-105, and against the Spurs 107-91. Barely landed when the Hawks began to chain successes in the NBA. It's sad to say, but T.Young's return at the end of November/beginning of December coincided with the decline of the Atlanta Hawks in the Eastern Conference standings. And his departure re-liberated the minds of certain boys like Alexander Walker, the new leader. In the middle of a road trip to the West, the form of the Hawks is astonishing, winning 87-110 against the Denver Nuggets last Saturday and 111-124 against the Warriors in the wake of CJ McCollum's first match as replacement, 12 points in 24 minutes of play.

The Milwaukee Bucks are back in Wisconsin after a 4-game road trip in the Western Conference. There were 2 good victories, and 2 less good defeats. Milwaukee notably took the upper hand at the Sacramento Kings 98-115 without forcing too much on the road, before falling to Curry's Warriors 120-113 still in California. Milwaukee then traveled to Los Angeles to challenge the Lakers against whom they won 101-105, before falling to the Denver Nuggets 108-104. The Minnesota Timberwolves, 4th in the Western Conference 26 wins - 14 losses, play the leading roles in the Western Conference again this year. Finalists last year, Rudy Gobert's teammates intend to win the 2025-26 conference title and the NBA title that the franchise has never managed to win in its history. The franchise, which remains on 5 victories in 6 meetings, won its last match at the start of the week for the reception of the San Antonio Spurs with a score of 104-103.

San Antonio Spurs
The OKC Thunder players were shaken as rarely by the Phoenix Suns 105-108 first in Arizona, then by the Charlotte Hornets who dominated the champion 97-124 at home. A huge drop in speed before difficult successes to obtain at home against the Utah Jazz 129-125 and in front of the Memphis Grizzlies 116-117 on the road. Two consecutive successes which allowed the Thunder to free themselves a little more in front of the Miami Heat by winning by a score of 124-112. It was the Spurs in December, thanks to 3 successes against the Thunder at the origin of this drop in performance for the reigning NBA champion. San Antonio opened Pandora's box, then teams like Minnesota, Phoenix and Charlotte stepped into the breach. However, the Spurs since their 3 successes have also slowed down, beaten 3 times in the last 5 games. We thought things would be better after successes against Boston 95-100 and the Lakers 107-91, but no, the Spurs lost a match that they had mastered against the Wolves: 104-103.

Houston is currently the big loser in the top 6 in the Western Conference. Kevin Durant's teammates were recently ejected from this very closed circle, giving way to a devilish 6th Phoenix with 3 successes in a row. The Houston Rockets 7th, 22 wins - 14 losses, after a success at home against the Suns 100-97, were beaten twice against the Portland Trail Blazers 103-102 and 111-105, before surrendering to the Sacramento Kings 111-98. The Chicago Bulls 10th, 18 wins - 20 losses, on the contrary, are having a superb 2025-26 season with lots of prospects for the future. Guys like Buzelis, or even Giddey in the top 3 discussions for the MIP, make managers realize that the idea of getting rid of LaVine and DeRozan was the best. Especially when we see what is happening to the Kings. The Bulls, 10th 18 wins - 20 losses, won their last match last Sunday in front of the Dallas Mavericks with a score of 125-107 after 3 consecutive defeats Charlotte, Boston, Detroit.

The Miami Heat, 8th in the Eastern Conference with a record of 20 wins - 19 losses, aims to play in the Play-offs this year. After a perfect start, Miami encountered some difficulties in its game like its 4 defeats in its last 5 games, for a victory against the weak Pelicans. Then massacred by the Minnesota Timberwolves 122-94 on Wednesday January 7, Miami then had a nice 123-99 against the Pacers on January 11, before being pulverized last by a Thunder who were not in great shape 124-112. The Phoenix Suns 6th, 24 wins - 15 losses, it was already quite a surprise to see them in the race for the Play-in. In the top 8 it was miraculous, and now in the top 6... we no longer know how to qualify this XXL feat for a franchise which lost Durant and Beal this summer, and still cannot count on injured Jalen Green. Winners of their last 3 games on the NBA floors, the Suns took the measure of the Grizzlies 98-117, the New York Knicks 112-107, then logically the Wizards 112-93.

Refresh

So what about some immediate games and the newest NBA sports betting odds? We have you covered. This weekend is full of great games, particularly on Sunday. The Suns are playing the Kings in a great Western Conference duel. Considering their current form and how well the team is playing together, the Suns’ odds of 1.46 make sense over the Kings’ 2.80. The over/under is 227.5 and should be a great over (1.77) to play as both teams have some heavy hitters on their rosters. Among Durant, Booker, and Beal on one side and Fox, DeRozan, and Sabonis on the other, it should be an easy win.

The struggling Bucks are playing the Celtics in what was supposed to be an Eastern Conference clash of contenders. However, it is not guaranteed due to the current form of the Milwaukee team. Still, Giannis and Lillard have a lot to prove and could actually come on top. Tatum is the lone star as his team is incomplete, hence the 1.80 odds for the Celtics and the 2.06 odds for the Bucks. This may be the game that turns it around for the Wisconsin team.

Who doesn’t like when the New York Knicks are good? It is simply great for the league and the sport! They are the favorites in their upcoming clash with the Indiana Pacers as the trades proved successful. Jalen Brunson, Karl-Anthony Towns, and Mikal Bridges on one side, and Pascal Siakam, Tyrese Haliburton, and Myles Turner are more than enough to get you the 1.77 over on the 226.5 threshold. As for the winner, the Knicks should take it. The bookies predict it and give them 1.81 over the Pacers’ 2.05.
