NBA News and Predictions

Roughly a month into the newest edition of the NBA season and already there are plenty of storylines that fans need to know about. While it may have seemed like we got everything figured out before the start, many of the early predictions fell through as some rather unexpected developments took place. Injuries are already piling up, expected contenders are struggling, and there is an overall feeling of uncertainty and unfamiliarity because of these unexpected factors. One thing is certain: it is still rather exciting to see the best of the best go at it night in and night out.

Because of all this, it is not easy for someone deeply invested in the best that basketball has to offer. No longer can you watch a game and know full well who is taking it before it actually finishes. Anything can happen and a bunch of stuff is happening. So how can an average fan of the NBA, or more importantly, an online sports betting enthusiast, prepare for a full slate of games? Is it possible to do enough research and should you trust the odds the bookies make? To these and other questions, we give answers in the following guide. Read on if you love basketball for the newest news, speculations, and predictions.

Struggling Playoff Teams

Two of the bigger stories deal with teams that were expected to make early pushes for the top of the standings and eventually make a deep playoff run. These are mainly the Philadelphia 76ers and the Milwaukee Bucks. Considering the names in their ranks and their past success, one of them more so than the other, they should be good for most of the season, right? Well, it seems like that will not be the case this season. It is already looking very bad for them and we have barely scratched the surface.

Let us start with Philly. The City of Brotherly Love has been Trusting the Process for years now, but alas, it was to no avail. After numerous disappointments and experiments with stars past their prime, Joel Embiid somehow won an MVP and everyone’s spirits were high. Then, of course, his injuries continued as he was still unable to finish a season and take the team past the second round. Now, he has yet to play a single game this season. He was involved in two controversies already.

First, he said that if it were up to him, he would never play in back-to-back games until the end of his career. For this, the league launched an investigation into Philadelphia’s conducting of player absences. Then, the shoved a reporter in the locker room and got suspended for three games. And all of this after missing the first few games due to injury. It cannot get any worse, can it? Well, Tyrese Maxey is out for several weeks with a hamstring injury and Paul George is a bit rusty after missing the first several games of the season. All in all, the 76ers are one of the worst teams right now with a 1-7 record and dead last in the Eastern Conference. Betting against them would not be a bad idea going forward.

Right above them with an abysmal 2-7 record are the Milwaukee Bucks, who, compared to Philly, are not struggling with any drama or major injuries to their stars. Sure, Khris Middleton is absent still and is yet to appear this season, but they are used to it by now. Their struggles come from a few other places. First off, it does seem like Doc Rivers is the greatest fraud in NBA coaching in the last 20 years. Since he took over, everything has gone downhill. Losing Jrue Holiday and getting Damian Lillard proved like a mistake as the team is struggling mightily on the defensive end and the duo of Giannis Antetokiunpo and Lillard cannot carry the entire offense on their own. If one of them misses a game, it is a definite loss, and they do tend to miss a game from time to time.

The lack of help from the bench as well as the remainder of the starting five is simply not enough to compete in the East right now. Other teams are younger, faster, and more talented, while the Bucks are the oldest team in the league with an average age of 30.4 years. All you need to know about their roster struggles is the fact that they are playing a 36-year-old Brook Lopez for 30 minutes a game. There is no end in sight to their struggles and Giannis constantly appears in trade rumors. It would be one of the biggest shakeups in the history of the league if or when the Bucks make a move. This cannot go on for much longer as frustration is already at a peak.

Cavaliers are for Real

On the opposite end of the spectrum are the incredible Cleveland Cavaliers who have run out of the gate to start the season and kept on sprinting. Throw a hurdle at them and they will clear it by a mile. Nothing seems to be phasing them as they opened the new campaign with a 10-0 and it seems like there is no end in sight to their amazing stretch. This is the best start in franchise history, and we are talking about a team that is synonymous with LeBron James. At the moment, Stake gives them the odds of 19.00 to take the title, with 7 other teams in front. Capitalizing now would be an amazing wagering foresight and they could very well do it.

Donovan Mitchel
~Donovan Mitchel

Donovan Mitchel and Darius Garland are leading the backcourt while the twin towers of Evan Mobley and Jarret Allen are anchoring the post. Such a combination of size and speed, offense and defense, is not present in many other teams. Add a constant threat from beyond the arc from the likes of Max Strus, Caris LeVert, Sam Merrill, and Isaac Okoro, and you have a well-rounded team poised for greatness. Betting on the Cavs is one of the surest things in basketball right now so be sure to ride the wave until it lasts. It is a good time once again to be an NBA fan in Cleveland.

Phoenix, Thunder, Celtics on a Roll

This assortment of contenders is doing their thing to open the season as all three teams are great right now. The Phoenix Suns are atop the Western Conference with an 8-1 record, same as the second-best Oklahoma City Thunder. Kevin Durant, Devin Booker, and Jusuf Nurkic are leading the way as the team is winning games, both close and lopsided, and finally playing well together. The chemistry of OKC is unmatched and it is just so good to watch the guys interact with each other and play so well together. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Chet Holmgren are leading the way and their supporting cast is unlike anything else in the league. They could be ready for that final push come playoff time.

In the East, right under the mighty Cavs is the defending champion, the Boston Celtics. With the odds to take another title and cement the dynasty being 3.60, they are still the bookies’ favorites. However, many teams are off to an amazing start and could ruin their best chance at a repeat in almost 4 decades. Jason Tatum is playing like an MVP, again, and several guys are coming into their own, especially Payton Pritchard. With Jaylen Brown and Kristaps Porzingis down with injuries, the Cs have not yet taken out their best starting five onto the court this season. It is a scary thought to have but there is no saying how good they will be when the gears start turning midway through the season.

Numerous Early MVP Candidates

After the first two weeks, the MVP battle looked nothing like we expected it to. Some names appeared there that no sane person would think of. For example, two Clippers players are incredible right now, but none of them are named James Harden or Kawhi Leonard. It is Norman Powell and Ivica Zubac who have been carrying the load and are the main contributors to the positive 5-4 record of a team who were supposed to be where the Bucks and Philly are right now. Zubac is averaging 16.7 points and 12.8 rebounds while Powell is playing out of his mind with 25.7 points per game.

The Sacramento Kings hoped for a better start than their current 5-4 record, but there is a lot to be optimistic about right now. They have three players averaging more than 20 points per game. De’Aron Fox is leading the way with 24.6 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 4.6 assists. DeMar DeRozan is currently at 24.2 points, 3.7 rebounds, and 4.1 assists per game. Domantas Sabonis is averaging 20.6 points, 13 rebounds, and 7.1 assists per game and has already had several triple-doubles.

Speaking of the Lithuanian superstar, he has had one of the best games in history, a perfect game as many called it. In their November 6 win over the Toronto Raptors, he did something nobody else has. Pay attention. He had a triple-double with 17 points, 11 rebounds, and 13 assists. He added 1 steal to it. But the great thing about it is that he shot 100% from the floor, 6/6, 100% from the free throw, 5/5, and did not have a single foul or turnover! Such a game is unheard of and it is a testament to how the new, non-American players (Jokic, Sabonis, Giannis, Luka, Shai) are changing the game.

The Los Angeles Lakers are currently in the 7th spot with a 5-4 record after opening the season in big fashion. With big stories surrounding them, none bigger than Bronny James and the new coaching staff led by JJ Reddick, they are handling the business well enough. LeBron James says he plans to play all 82 games this season, something he has only done once in his 22-year-long career. That is promising as the team needs all he can give them, and he is delivering amazingly well for a soon-to-be 40-year-old.

However, it is Anthony Davis who is leading the way and making an early push for the MVP. The 31-year-old is currently averaging 32.4 points, 11.3 rebounds, 2.8 assists, 1.4 steals, and 2 blocks per game on 57% shooting. These are MVP numbers and should he be able to play enough games, it could be his year. He is also delivering on the defensive end so it could be a battle between him and Victor Wembanyama for the Defensive Player of the Year Award.

LA Lakers
LA Lakers
San Antonio 2nd, 25 wins - 11 losses will not have managed to take advantage of the very small form of the OKC Thunder leader, 30 wins - 7 losses to get closer to 1st place in the Western conference. Much worse still, V.Wembanyama's teammates have lost 4 of their last 6 matches. This is especially very problematic given the opponents San Antonio faced. Capable of beating the Thunder 3 times, losing to the Utah Jazz at home 114-127, to the Cavaliers at home 101-113, this weekend to the Blazers 110-115 and to the Grizzlies last night 106-105 is impossible. The Los Angeles Lakers 23 wins - 11 losses 3rd in the Western Conference were also on deck last night to challenge the New Orleans Pelicans. A match a priori simpler but not necessarily because the Spurs yesterday played against the B team of the Grizzlies let's not forget, while New Orleans certainly 15th, could count on almost its entire group. In this match, the Lakers won the bet 103-111 forcing the decision in the 4th quarter 17-32. A success which follows the 2 previous ones obtained with the Grizzlies 128-121, 120-114.

At a time when the Wizards have won 3 of their last 4 games, New York 2nd, 23 wins - 13 losses has dropped the last 4. Already shaken by the 76ers in the Garden after the NBA Cup title won against the Spurs 124-113 in mid-December, New York has visibly released a lot of energy, and is paying for it in cash... Last week was disastrous after a setback to the Spurs 134-132 for revenge, the Atlanta Hawks at home 99-110 and the Philadelphia 76ers 119-130. Heavy defeats, before challenging the leader Detroit night from Sunday to Monday, against which New York ate the dust defeat 121-90. As a reminder after successes before the Lakers in the derby 103-88, then against the Rockets 128-108, the Blazers on the road 103-119, the Pistons leaders in the East 112-99, demonstration in front of Sacramento 131-90, and finally big victory against the Jazz 118-101, the Los Angeles Clippers 11th, 13 wins - 22 losses had lost heavily to the Boston Celtics at home in front of the diabolical precision of J.Brown 50 points. 48 hours later, on the night of Sunday to last Monday precisely, LA had a meeting against Golden State without the injured Harden and won this match 103-102, in order to follow up with a 7th success in 8 games.

Denver Nuggets
Boston hardly ever loses a game anymore. The Clover franchise demonstrated exemplary strength of character in a pivotal moment of the season. Indeed, the 18-time NBA champion is slowly starting to break away from the top 6, now in 2nd place in the Eastern Conference. After successes against the Utah Jazz 119-129 and the Kings 106-120 before beating the ogre Los Angeles Clippers 115-146, Boston took the measure of Chicago 115-104 with Jaylen Brown at 25% shooting success 6-24. What kind of victories are these? Still traveling in the Eastern Conference to play its 7th and final match since leaving Colorado on December 26, Denver 4th, 24 wins - 12 losses has lost a lot of feathers during this period. No less than 4 defeats in 6 games, ahead of Orlando 127-126, Miami 147-123, Cleveland 113-108 and Brooklyn 127-115, and especially the serious injury to Jokic during the trip to the Heat. Fortunately, mentally, with a B, even C team, Denver heroically took the measure of the Philly 76ers on the night of Monday to Tuesday 124-125.

Chicago Bulls
The Detroit Pistons 1st, 27 victories - 9 defeats following a period of doubt at the end of December, 3 defeats in 5 matches, banged their fist on the table in order to assert the status which has been theirs since the start of the season in the Eastern Conference. 2 huge performances from Cade Cunningham and his friends to stay at the top of the Eastern Conference and outrun the competition. As a reminder, to conclude the week, Detroit on Sunday beat the Cavaliers 110-114 in Ohio before capsizing the 2nd NY Knicks in Michigan 121-90, winning by +31. Are the 9th Chicago Bulls, 17 wins - 19 losses really in danger in the quest for a Play-in? Yes, but not too much. 2 teams will come and fight for the top 10, because for now, barring a miracle, the Pacers, Wizards and Nets, 15th, 14th and 13th, should no longer pose too many problems. On the other hand, in ambush, you find the Hornets 12th winners at the OKC Thunder during their last match, and the Bucks 11th winners of their last 2 games in the NBA. Chicago 9th, which is ahead of Atlanta 10th, has however lost its last two duels in the NBA to the Hornets 99-112 and the Celtics 115-101.

The example is perfect. Charlotte remains the most enigmatic team in the entire league. Capable of the worst as well as the best, the 12th in the Eastern Conference made the formidable OKC Thunder look like amateurs 48 hours ago in Oklahoma. Indeed, Buzz City rolled on the reigning champion, certainly back-to-back, but with all its best players in combat gear. Charlotte after a vigorous success against the Bulls last weekend 99-112, therefore confirmed by beating OKC by ... 27 points, 97-124. The Toronto Raptors 22 wins - 15 losses are firmly in 4th place in the Eastern Conference. Brandon Ingram and his friends would probably sign directly to finish in the top 4, but the road is still long for a Toronto with 65% defeats last year in the NBA and whose rebirth is miraculous. In difficulty on their floor during December, the T-Rex regained their appetite by winning twice against the Atlanta Hawks consecutively. First time 134-117 and second time 118-100.

How to lose this kind of matches, as well as any credibility for a return to the top 4. Indeed, the opportunity was nevertheless superb for the 76ers to the extent that the duel between the Pistons 1st and the Knicks 2nd was going to leave its mark at the top of the ranking. Receiving a Denver team deprived of its starting 5, as well as its close rotation, should allow Philly to follow up after successes in front of Memphis, Dallas and New York, but it lost after an overtime on a last possession missed by T.Maxey 124-125 AD. Philadelphia is 5th in the conference 19 wins - 15 losses.Put yourself in our place for two minutes, show compassion... Because indeed, we are obliged to take into account the fact that Washington wins games in 2026. Yes, yes. It seems a little crazy saying that, but the Wizards left 15th place to the detriment of Indiana, and remain on 3 wins in the last 4 games played. The Washington Wizards, beaten on Sunday by the Wolves in great form 115-141, got the better of the Orlando Magic 120-112 last night at the end of a quality, controlled game.

New Orleans Pelicans
This 2025-26 financial year, like a fairy tale, had started perfectly for the Atlanta Hawks 10th, 17 wins - 21 losses, of which the absence of T.Young will in no way disrupt the balance and the good results of the group, on the contrary, his return has undermined the balance found with his replacement Alexander-Walker. Result: the franchise wants to trade him. It fell recently, the rumor is already circulating a lot, the Wizards would be in pole position to get it back, the Wolves, the Clippers are following the file, as well as the Bucks. One thing is certain, Atlanta will want to recover heavyweight for the man who is still currently the superstar of the Hawks. Atlanta is otherwise going badly, beaten 8 times in the last 10 games, twice heavily against the Raptors 134-117, 118-100. New Orleans keeps both wings and both legs warm in the depths of the Western Conference. Second worst record in the league, bottom of the Western Conference, beaten 8 times in a row in the NBA, not many people left to build on, and the scheduled departure of Zion Williamson, it really doesn't smell good yet for the Pelicans who hosted the LA Lakers last night. Surprise: NOLA led after 3 quarters 86-79, before cracking in the last 12 minutes of play.

The Brooklyn Nets 13th, 11 wins - 22 losses will certainly not play the Play-in but like every year since the departures of Durant, Harden and Irving, Brooklyn is playing the game, close to the Play-in. Brooklyn Nets beaten 3 times consecutively in the NBA Warriors, Rockets, Wizards challenged Denver Nuggets last Sunday deprived of many players but back with Gordon on the bench. If the latter succeeded in his return to 20 points, Denver was too limited, beaten 127-115 in the New York district.  The Orlando Magic is starting to look very worrying. 7th in the conference 20 wins - 17 losses the latest defeats of the Orlando Magic are very problematic for the franchise beaten by the weaker each time. Like the last 10 games in which Banchero's Orlando Magic surrendered to the Charlotte Hornets 105-120, the Chicago Bulls 121-114 and the icing on the cake at the Washington Wizards last night with a score of 120-112 at the end of a one-sided game, where Washington led by almost +15 at the start of the last 12 minutes of play.

Utah Jazz
How to interpret the decline of the OKC Thunder in the NBA in recent games? If the champion remains the champion for the moment, with his certainties, his first place, and his best record, the fact remains that he has just fallen twice. So losing against the Phoenix Suns 105-108 who were impatiently waiting to take their revenge on this team which had massacred them in the quarter-finals of the NBA Cup, it's audible, on the other hand losing a 97-124 in front of the Charlotte Hornets is quite worrying 24 hours later. To see the face that the champion will show this evening. Place at Utah Jazz 13th, 12 victories - 23 defeats whose performance is getting smaller and smaller. We have warned you about this franchise. Long-term performance risks faltering as the objective after losing Sexton, Clarkson and Collins this summer was to rebuild in the long term. In this regard, since Markkanen flared up at the start of the season and continues to do so, the leaders are trying to exchange him for the best possible deal. In the meantime, Utah lost its last 4 games in the NBA to finish, ahead of the Celtics 119-129, the Clippers 118-101, Warriors 123-114 and Blazers 137-117.

Dallas Mavericks
The Sacramento Kings, 14th in the Western Conference with a record of 8 wins - 27 losses, will not go very far this year, let's admit it. So recruiting quality guys for all positions doesn't get you anywhere. On paper, however, it was XXL with LaVine, DeRozan, Sabonis, Murray, Westbrook, Monk etc. But this franchise has never found its balance. Sacramento has also lost its last 5 games in the NBA to the Lakers 125-101, Clippers 131-90, Boston Celtics 106-120, Phoenix Suns 129-102 and Milwaukee Bucks 98-115. The Dallas Mavericks travel to the Sacramento Kings against whom defeat is absolutely forbidden. Dallas' situation in 12th ranking, 13 wins - 23 losses no longer allows it to allow this kind of misstep against a franchise ready to break its squad. In great danger on the NBA floors after no less than 4 consecutive defeats Warriors, Kings, Blazers, 76ers, Dallas managed to win over the Houston Rockets in the derby 110-104 at the end of last week, helped by the opponent's injury from the first minute of play.

Miami Heat
Well anchored in the top 6 of the Western Conference, this Minnesota group, along with that of Denver, and now OKC, is among the most experienced in the entire league that's for sure. In other words, Chris Fynch's team is a good big diesel, often ready for the Play-offs, where the season really begins for some teams. Visiting the East last week for a 4-game road trip, Minnesota won 3, ahead of the Bulls 101-136, the Miami Heat 115-125 and the Wizards 115-141. For a defeat in Atlanta. 23 wins and 13 losses for Gobert's teammates this season. The Miami Heat occupies 7th place in the Eastern Conference with a record of 20 wins - 16 losses. It's not bad for the moment, although the Heat have a good chance of seeing higher soon. After 2 and a half months of recovery, the mayonnaise is setting well. In good shape, the Heat remains on 5 wins in 6 games, beaten only by... the Wolves 115-125 last week, after this significant success with the leader in the East Detroit and before this great reaction at home against the Pelicans 125-106.

The Memphis Grizzlies 10th, 15 wins - 20 losses should sound the alarm and think about their future, as the Trade period approaches in the NBA. Keep Morant or let him go? The Grizzlies superstar is popular in the NBA in addition to having excellent market value, and has brought too much trouble to his partners over time. Rebuilding is possible, especially since the current record and form take the Grizzlies a long way from the top 7 21 wins - 15 losses. Memphis has in fact been beaten 4 times in a row in the NBA in front of the Wizards 116-112, 76ers 136-139, and Lakers twice: 128-121 and 120-114. On the contrary, San Antonio 2nd, 25 wins - 10 losses places itself in the shoes of the runner-up of the OKC Thunder 30 wins - 7 losses massacred last night by the Charlotte Hornets by almost 30 points. Too bad for Spurs because playing first place, without making a few small mistakes, would have been possible. Beaten 3 times in their last 5 games against the Utah Jazz 114-127, Cleveland Cavaliers 101-113, Portland Trail Blazers 110-115, the Spurs still won their two games preceding their sad defeat against Portland: against the Knicks and against Washington.

The New Orleans Pelicans, as they know how to do, cultivate defeat with great precision. Losing matches is an art among the birds of the Bayou, we let you savor the last 7 results of the current red lantern in the Western Conference, a true masterpiece once again. First well-marked defeat to the Cavaliers 141-118, before being hit by the Suns twice 108-115, 114-123, then at home against the Knicks 125-130 and Blazers 102-122, and on the road against the Bulls 134-118 and Miami to finish 125-106. Place for the Los Angeles Lakers now 3rd in the conference West with a record of 22 wins – 11 losses. Although they were suffering at the end of December, overall, LeBron James and his friends managed to find a smile again thanks to the Memphis Grizzlies. Passing through to play two matches in the Crypto.Com Arena, Ja Morant's teammates were successively beaten 128-121 and 120-114. Two matches not necessarily mastered from start to finish, but won by the Californians.

The magic of the holidays allowed Washington to show a bit of regularity in its game. A first since the departure of Bradley Beal at the start of the 2020s. Winner of 4 of its last 6 games, Washington beat Toronto at home 138-117 and the Grizzlies 116-112, the Bucks in Milwaukee 113-114 and even the Brooklyn Nets at home with a significant gap. 119-99. On the other hand, the passage of the Minnesota Timberwolves in the Capital 48 hours ago, finalists of the Western conference in 2024-25, allowed Washington to see how far it still has to go in defeat 115-147. Everyone is aware in the Eastern conference and we for our part had made it the big favorite for the title in the East. This Orlando franchise with Banchero, F.Wagner, J.Suggs plus the arrival of Bane had a group cut out for the first 2 places, but is currently only 6th in the Eastern Conference. Like last year, the one who nicknamed herself "The Beautiful City" on the other side of the Atlantic, was troubled by injuries, which did not prevent her from winning against the Indiana Pacers 135-127 after a defeat in Chicago. Orlando has had a series of victory - defeat - victory - defeat for 10 games.

Usually, the reigning Eastern Conference champion is the type to find his rhythm quickly in order to play at the very top of the table. In recent years, at least, the champion plays in the Play-offs. It was difficult for the Heat in 2023-24 but the Florida franchise was there. From there to finding Indiana in 15th and therefore last place in the conference with the worst record in the entire league 6 wins - 30 losses was inconceivable. Indiana, to finish in style, lost a 12th game in a row against Orlando 135-127. The Cleveland Cavaliers 8th, 20 wins - 17 losses, although they lost their last game to the Detroit Pistons 110-114, seem on the right track. Firstly, the group no longer has a long-term injured player as was the case with Mobley, Allen and especially Garland for 1 month at the start of the season. A starting 5 found as well as victories against the Spurs 101-113 on the road, then at home in front of the Suns 129-113 and the Denver Nuggets 113-108 to finish just before this setback therefore against the conference leader.

Refresh

So what about some immediate games and the newest NBA sports betting odds? We have you covered. This weekend is full of great games, particularly on Sunday. The Suns are playing the Kings in a great Western Conference duel. Considering their current form and how well the team is playing together, the Suns’ odds of 1.46 make sense over the Kings’ 2.80. The over/under is 227.5 and should be a great over (1.77) to play as both teams have some heavy hitters on their rosters. Among Durant, Booker, and Beal on one side and Fox, DeRozan, and Sabonis on the other, it should be an easy win.

The struggling Bucks are playing the Celtics in what was supposed to be an Eastern Conference clash of contenders. However, it is not guaranteed due to the current form of the Milwaukee team. Still, Giannis and Lillard have a lot to prove and could actually come on top. Tatum is the lone star as his team is incomplete, hence the 1.80 odds for the Celtics and the 2.06 odds for the Bucks. This may be the game that turns it around for the Wisconsin team.

Who doesn’t like when the New York Knicks are good? It is simply great for the league and the sport! They are the favorites in their upcoming clash with the Indiana Pacers as the trades proved successful. Jalen Brunson, Karl-Anthony Towns, and Mikal Bridges on one side, and Pascal Siakam, Tyrese Haliburton, and Myles Turner are more than enough to get you the 1.77 over on the 226.5 threshold. As for the winner, the Knicks should take it. The bookies predict it and give them 1.81 over the Pacers’ 2.05.
