NBA News and Predictions

Roughly a month into the newest edition of the NBA season and already there are plenty of storylines that fans need to know about. While it may have seemed like we got everything figured out before the start, many of the early predictions fell through as some rather unexpected developments took place. Injuries are already piling up, expected contenders are struggling, and there is an overall feeling of uncertainty and unfamiliarity because of these unexpected factors. One thing is certain: it is still rather exciting to see the best of the best go at it night in and night out.

Because of all this, it is not easy for someone deeply invested in the best that basketball has to offer. No longer can you watch a game and know full well who is taking it before it actually finishes. Anything can happen and a bunch of stuff is happening. So how can an average fan of the NBA, or more importantly, an online sports betting enthusiast, prepare for a full slate of games? Is it possible to do enough research and should you trust the odds the bookies make? To these and other questions, we give answers in the following guide. Read on if you love basketball for the newest news, speculations, and predictions.

Struggling Playoff Teams

Two of the bigger stories deal with teams that were expected to make early pushes for the top of the standings and eventually make a deep playoff run. These are mainly the Philadelphia 76ers and the Milwaukee Bucks. Considering the names in their ranks and their past success, one of them more so than the other, they should be good for most of the season, right? Well, it seems like that will not be the case this season. It is already looking very bad for them and we have barely scratched the surface.

Let us start with Philly. The City of Brotherly Love has been Trusting the Process for years now, but alas, it was to no avail. After numerous disappointments and experiments with stars past their prime, Joel Embiid somehow won an MVP and everyone’s spirits were high. Then, of course, his injuries continued as he was still unable to finish a season and take the team past the second round. Now, he has yet to play a single game this season. He was involved in two controversies already.

First, he said that if it were up to him, he would never play in back-to-back games until the end of his career. For this, the league launched an investigation into Philadelphia’s conducting of player absences. Then, the shoved a reporter in the locker room and got suspended for three games. And all of this after missing the first few games due to injury. It cannot get any worse, can it? Well, Tyrese Maxey is out for several weeks with a hamstring injury and Paul George is a bit rusty after missing the first several games of the season. All in all, the 76ers are one of the worst teams right now with a 1-7 record and dead last in the Eastern Conference. Betting against them would not be a bad idea going forward.

Right above them with an abysmal 2-7 record are the Milwaukee Bucks, who, compared to Philly, are not struggling with any drama or major injuries to their stars. Sure, Khris Middleton is absent still and is yet to appear this season, but they are used to it by now. Their struggles come from a few other places. First off, it does seem like Doc Rivers is the greatest fraud in NBA coaching in the last 20 years. Since he took over, everything has gone downhill. Losing Jrue Holiday and getting Damian Lillard proved like a mistake as the team is struggling mightily on the defensive end and the duo of Giannis Antetokiunpo and Lillard cannot carry the entire offense on their own. If one of them misses a game, it is a definite loss, and they do tend to miss a game from time to time.

The lack of help from the bench as well as the remainder of the starting five is simply not enough to compete in the East right now. Other teams are younger, faster, and more talented, while the Bucks are the oldest team in the league with an average age of 30.4 years. All you need to know about their roster struggles is the fact that they are playing a 36-year-old Brook Lopez for 30 minutes a game. There is no end in sight to their struggles and Giannis constantly appears in trade rumors. It would be one of the biggest shakeups in the history of the league if or when the Bucks make a move. This cannot go on for much longer as frustration is already at a peak.

Cavaliers are for Real

On the opposite end of the spectrum are the incredible Cleveland Cavaliers who have run out of the gate to start the season and kept on sprinting. Throw a hurdle at them and they will clear it by a mile. Nothing seems to be phasing them as they opened the new campaign with a 10-0 and it seems like there is no end in sight to their amazing stretch. This is the best start in franchise history, and we are talking about a team that is synonymous with LeBron James. At the moment, Stake gives them the odds of 19.00 to take the title, with 7 other teams in front. Capitalizing now would be an amazing wagering foresight and they could very well do it.

Donovan Mitchel
~Donovan Mitchel

Donovan Mitchel and Darius Garland are leading the backcourt while the twin towers of Evan Mobley and Jarret Allen are anchoring the post. Such a combination of size and speed, offense and defense, is not present in many other teams. Add a constant threat from beyond the arc from the likes of Max Strus, Caris LeVert, Sam Merrill, and Isaac Okoro, and you have a well-rounded team poised for greatness. Betting on the Cavs is one of the surest things in basketball right now so be sure to ride the wave until it lasts. It is a good time once again to be an NBA fan in Cleveland.

Phoenix, Thunder, Celtics on a Roll

This assortment of contenders is doing their thing to open the season as all three teams are great right now. The Phoenix Suns are atop the Western Conference with an 8-1 record, same as the second-best Oklahoma City Thunder. Kevin Durant, Devin Booker, and Jusuf Nurkic are leading the way as the team is winning games, both close and lopsided, and finally playing well together. The chemistry of OKC is unmatched and it is just so good to watch the guys interact with each other and play so well together. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Chet Holmgren are leading the way and their supporting cast is unlike anything else in the league. They could be ready for that final push come playoff time.

In the East, right under the mighty Cavs is the defending champion, the Boston Celtics. With the odds to take another title and cement the dynasty being 3.60, they are still the bookies’ favorites. However, many teams are off to an amazing start and could ruin their best chance at a repeat in almost 4 decades. Jason Tatum is playing like an MVP, again, and several guys are coming into their own, especially Payton Pritchard. With Jaylen Brown and Kristaps Porzingis down with injuries, the Cs have not yet taken out their best starting five onto the court this season. It is a scary thought to have but there is no saying how good they will be when the gears start turning midway through the season.

Numerous Early MVP Candidates

After the first two weeks, the MVP battle looked nothing like we expected it to. Some names appeared there that no sane person would think of. For example, two Clippers players are incredible right now, but none of them are named James Harden or Kawhi Leonard. It is Norman Powell and Ivica Zubac who have been carrying the load and are the main contributors to the positive 5-4 record of a team who were supposed to be where the Bucks and Philly are right now. Zubac is averaging 16.7 points and 12.8 rebounds while Powell is playing out of his mind with 25.7 points per game.

The Sacramento Kings hoped for a better start than their current 5-4 record, but there is a lot to be optimistic about right now. They have three players averaging more than 20 points per game. De’Aron Fox is leading the way with 24.6 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 4.6 assists. DeMar DeRozan is currently at 24.2 points, 3.7 rebounds, and 4.1 assists per game. Domantas Sabonis is averaging 20.6 points, 13 rebounds, and 7.1 assists per game and has already had several triple-doubles.

Speaking of the Lithuanian superstar, he has had one of the best games in history, a perfect game as many called it. In their November 6 win over the Toronto Raptors, he did something nobody else has. Pay attention. He had a triple-double with 17 points, 11 rebounds, and 13 assists. He added 1 steal to it. But the great thing about it is that he shot 100% from the floor, 6/6, 100% from the free throw, 5/5, and did not have a single foul or turnover! Such a game is unheard of and it is a testament to how the new, non-American players (Jokic, Sabonis, Giannis, Luka, Shai) are changing the game.

The Los Angeles Lakers are currently in the 7th spot with a 5-4 record after opening the season in big fashion. With big stories surrounding them, none bigger than Bronny James and the new coaching staff led by JJ Reddick, they are handling the business well enough. LeBron James says he plans to play all 82 games this season, something he has only done once in his 22-year-long career. That is promising as the team needs all he can give them, and he is delivering amazingly well for a soon-to-be 40-year-old.

However, it is Anthony Davis who is leading the way and making an early push for the MVP. The 31-year-old is currently averaging 32.4 points, 11.3 rebounds, 2.8 assists, 1.4 steals, and 2 blocks per game on 57% shooting. These are MVP numbers and should he be able to play enough games, it could be his year. He is also delivering on the defensive end so it could be a battle between him and Victor Wembanyama for the Defensive Player of the Year Award.

Cleveland Cavaliers
Cleveland Cavaliers
Coach Chris Fynch's team is ready for war and as we like to say regularly, this franchise is among the most experienced currently in the NBA. Finalist last year ahead of the Thunder 4-1, Minnesota likes this position of the hunter, in 5th place, in possession of a good record of 24 victories - 13 defeats, finally a stone's throw from the 1st place of the Thunder. On the NBA floors, after two consecutive successes against the Heat 115-125 and Wizards 115-141, the Minnesota Timberwolves took the measure of Miami in its Target Center for the revenge 122-94. The Cleveland Cavaliers 7th, 21 wins - 17 losses show up with an odds of 2.10 we still don't know by what miracle... Because in fact the difference in level and structure this year between the two teams is once again notable. The Wolves at home are terrifying, but Cleveland remains popular with the bookmakers. A team from Ohio whose fate in the match almost escaped them at the Indiana Pacers 48 hours earlier, despite having been beaten 12 times in a row before the passage of the Cavaliers, finally victorious 116-120.

Miami Heat
As of Thursday January 8, 2026 at 11 a.m., you would have told the leaders of Chicago. “Your team will be top 10, with a record of 17 wins – 20 losses.” No one you would have believed. Because in fact, Chicago, by losing LaVine, DeRozan and Ball, put an end to a Big Three that never worked. The goal this year was to take on this reconstruction for Chicago, only a boy like Josh Giddey among the 3 big favorites for the MIP title heard it differently. In the absence of the Australian however, Chicago lost its last 3 games to Charlotte 99-112, Celtics 115-101 and Pistons 108-93 last night. Opposite the Miami Heat are 8th in the Eastern Conference with 20 wins - 17 losses. The results of a team that is doing the job for the moment, living up to the ambitions of the franchise. However, the mayonnaise around T.Herro, B.Adebayo and N.Powell is tasty, when all 3 men are finally available at the same time, things will probably change. For now, Miami wins one game, loses one game. Like his success Monday against the Pelicans 125-106 and then defeat at the Timberwolves 122-94.

We have warned you. We told you that Charlotte has never confirmed a good result for years. Her irregularity is her biggest flaw, Charlotte, after a vigorous success with the Bulls last weekend 99-111 and without possible dispute her best match by winning the bet 97-124 on the floor of the OKC Thunder the reigning champion, has just lost at home against the Toronto Raptors. On the other hand, it was very cruel for the Hornets, who fell after a clutch shot from Quickley long distance 96-97. Quickly... The situation of the Indiana Pacers is worrying, but only for this year shall we say. Indiana without Haliburton struggled morally. Next year he will be back, if Indiana remains 15th the franchise will get a Draft round towards the top 3, coach Rick Carlisle will stay. Next year Indiana will play for the top 6, but this year it's dead. Worst record in the league 6 wins - 31 losses, plus 13th defeat in a row against Cleveland 48 hours ago 116-120.

Milwaukee Bucks
The Golden State Warriors 8th, 19 wins - 18 losses will have to focus 3000% to hope to reach the top 6 of the Western Conference, because for now, we still don't see where the Warriors' place is. Indeed, Stephen Curry's partners for the moment cannot claim to compete with OKC, Denver, San Antonio, Houston, Lakers and Wolves. Even more so when they manage to lose against the Los Angeles Clippers by a score of 103-102 deprived of James Harden 48 hours ago. Finally something is coming to life shall we say at the Milwaukee Bucks. The Wisconsin franchise has indeed managed to show a semblance of regularity since the return of its franchise player to the group. As if by magic, the return of Giannis Antetokounmpo did a world of good for this Milwaukee Bucks team, victorious in 4 of its last 5 games played in the NBA. In front of the Bulls 103-112, the Hornets 113-123 and 122-121 and the Kings 98-115 48 hours ago.

Houston Rockets
Portland 9th in the West, 17 wins - 20 losses is simply working wonders. If Phoenix, in many ways, is the biggest surprise in this Western Conference, Portland is its runner-up. The Blazers have won their last 3 games in the NBA. First in a very pragmatic way against a New Orleans team at a standstill 109-122, then more surprisingly among the San Antonio Spurs 110-115 and once again very diligent in front of the Utah Jazz with a score of 137-117. The Houston Rockets are in 5th place in the Western Conference, 22 wins – 11 losses. Franchise in good shape with no less than 5 successes in the last 6 games, Houston is doing the job in the big league to get closer to 1st place OKC Thunder 30 wins - 7 losses. The Rockets hosted the Phoenix Suns 48 hours ago in a match that was still very special after the Brooks-Green exchange for Durant, which gave the Texans victory following an XXL long-distance shot 4 seconds from time.

San Antonio 2nd, 25 wins - 11 losses will not have managed to take advantage of the poor form of the OKC Thunder leader, 30 wins - 7 losses to get closer to 1st place in the Western Conference. Worse, V.Wembanyama's teammates have lost 4 of their last 6 matches. This is especially very problematic given the opponents San Antonio faced. Capable of beating the Thunder 3 times, the Spurs lost at home against the Utah Jazz 114-127, in front of the Cavaliers 101-113, this weekend against the Blazers 110-115 and at the Grizzlies last night 106-105. Impossible to be champion with so much inconsistency. The Los Angeles Lakers 23 wins - 11 losses are only two wins behind the Spurs and rank 3rd in the Western Conference. They were also on deck last night to challenge the New Orleans Pelicans. A match a priori simpler but not necessarily because the Spurs yesterday played against the B team of the Grizzlies let's not forget, while New Orleans certainly 15th was at home and less diminished. In this match, the Lakers won the bet 103-111 forcing the decision in the 4th quarter 17-32. A success which follows the 2 previous ones obtained with the Grizzlies 128-121, 120-114.

Utah Jazz
How to interpret the decline of the OKC Thunder in the NBA in recent games? If the champion remains the champion for the moment, with his certainties, his first place, and his best record, the fact remains that he has just fallen twice. So losing against the Phoenix Suns 105-108 who were impatiently waiting to take their revenge on this team which had massacred them in the quarter-finals of the NBA Cup, it's audible. On the other hand, being eaten 24 hours after a 97-124 at home against the Charlotte Hornets is quite worrying. To see the face that the champion will show this evening. Place at Utah Jazz 13th, 12 victories - 23 defeats whose performance is getting smaller and smaller. We warned you about this franchise, it risked failing in the long term to the extent that the objective after losing Sexton, Clarkson and Collins this summer, was to rebuild. In this regard, since Markkanen flared up at the start of the season and continues to do so, the leaders will perhaps try to exchange him for the best possible counterpart. Utah has lost its last 4 games in the NBA: to the Celtics 119-129, Clippers 118-101, Warriors 123-114 and Blazers 137-117.

Phoenix Suns
The Memphis Grizzlies 10th, 16 wins - 20 losses were in war gear last night to challenge the San Antonio Spurs against whom they had very little chance of winning with odds of 3.00 or more. Such a high rating is very logical for a weaker Memphis, with 4 consecutive losses and deprived of Morant. And yet the Tennessee Bears gave Wembanyama and his gang a hard time to win by the narrowest of margins 106-105. A victory which puts the Grizzlies 10th, 16 wins - 20 losses in the right direction. The Phoenix Suns 7th, 21 wins - 15 losses display a nice dose of ambition. This presence in the top 8 was in no way expected at the start of the season. Phoenix is playing well and was rewarded at the end of last week after an XXL success against the OKC Thunder with a score of 108-105 in Arizona on a clutch shot from Booker with 0.7 seconds remaining. In the process, unfortunately for the Arizona franchise, in a match that Phoenix held on the right end, the Valley of the Sun surrendered 100-97 to the Houston Rockets.

Orlando Magic
The Brooklyn Nets 13th, 11 wins - 22 losses will certainly not play in the Play-in but like every year since the departures of Durant, Harden and Irving, Brooklyn is playing the game, close to the top 10. Brooklyn Nets beaten 3 times in a row Warriors, Rockets, Wizards challenged the Denver Nuggets last Sunday deprived of many players but with Gordon back on the bench. If the latter succeeded in his return to 20 points, Denver was too limited, beaten 127-115 in the New York district.  The Orlando Magic is starting to look very worrying. The last defeats of the 7th in the conference 20 wins - 17 losses are very problematic because the franchise has been beaten by weaker on paper each time. Succeeding defeat - victory - defeat - victory for more than 10 games, Banchero's Orlando Magic surrendered to the Charlotte Hornets 105-120, the Chicago Bulls 121-114 and the icing on the cake at the Washington Wizards last night with a score of 120-112 at the end of a one-sided game. Washington led by almost +15 entering the final 12 minutes of play.

New Orleans Pelicans
This 2025-26 financial year started perfectly for the Atlanta Hawks 10th, 17 wins - 21 losses, very strong without Trae Young. On the contrary, his return undermined the balance found with his replacement Alexander-Walker. Result, the franchise wants to trade him. The rumor is already circulating a lot, the Wizards would be in pole position to get him back, when the Wolves, the Clippers are following the file, as well as the Bucks. One thing is certain, Atlanta will want to recover heavyweight for the man who is still currently the superstar of the Hawks. Otherwise, Atlanta is doing badly, beaten 8 times in the last 10 games, including twice heavily last time against the Raptors: 134-117 and 118-100. The New Orleans Pelicans keep both wings and both legs warm in the depths of the Western Conference. Second worst record in the league, bottom of the Western Conference, beaten 8 times consecutively in the NBA, not many people to build on, and planned departure of Zion Williamson, it really doesn't smell good yet for the Pelicans who hosted the LA Lakers last night. Surprise, NOLA led after 3 quarters 86-79, before cracking in the last 12 minutes of play.

Things are not going well in the East. At a time when the Wizards have won 3 of their last 4 games, New York 3rd, 23 wins - 13 losses has dropped the last 4. Already shaken by the 76ers in the Garden after the NBA Cup title won against the Spurs in mid-December, New York has visibly released a lot of energy, and is paying for it... Last week was disastrous with 4 defeats in 4 games in front of the Spurs 134-132 for revenge, at home against the Atlanta Hawks 99-110 and the Philadelphia 76ers 119-130, and finally against the leader Detroit during the night from Sunday to Monday. New York ate the dust defeat 121-90. As a reminder, after 6 big consecutive successes, the Los Angeles Clippers 11th, 13 wins - 22 losses had lost heavily to the Boston Celtics at home in front of the diabolical precision of J.Brown 50 points. 48 hours later, on the night of Sunday to last Monday precisely, LA had a meeting against Golden State without an injured Harden. At home, the Clippers won this match 103-102, in order to achieve a 7th success in 8 games.

How can you lose these kinds of matches, as well as any credibility for a return to the top 4? However, the opportunity was superb for the 76ers to the extent that the duel between the 1st Pistons and the 2nd Knicks was going to leave its mark at the top of the standings. Receiving a Denver team deprived of its starting 5, as well as its close rotation, should allow Philly to follow up after successes in front of Memphis, Dallas and New York, but it lost after an overtime on a last possession missed by T.Maxey 124-125 AD. Philadelphia is 5th in conference 19 wins - 15 losses. Washington wins games in 2026. Yes, yes. It seems a little crazy said like that, but the Wizards left 15th place to the detriment of Indiana, and even had 3 wins in their last 4 games played. The Washington Wizards, beaten on Sunday by the Wolves in great form 115-141, then got the better of the Orlando Magic 120-112 last night at the end of a quality, controlled game.

The Detroit Pistons 1st, 27 wins - 9 losses, following a period of doubt at the end of December 3 defeats in 5 games, banged their fist on the table in order to assert the status which has been theirs since the start of the season in the Eastern Conference. 2 huge performances from Cade Cunningham and his friends to stay at the top of the Eastern Conference and even outrun the competition. To conclude last week, Detroit beat the Cavaliers 110-114 in Ohio before capsizing the NY Knicks then 2nd in Michigan 121-90, winning by +31. Are the Chicago Bulls 9th, 17 wins - 19 losses really in danger in the quest for a Play-in? Yes, but not too much. A priori 2 teams will come and fight for the top 10, because barring a miracle, the Pacers, Wizards and Nets, 15th, 14th and 13th, should no longer pose too many problems. On the other hand, in ambush, you find the Hornets 12th winners at the OKC Thunder during their last match, and the Bucks 11th winners of their last 2 games in the NBA. Chicago 9th, which is ahead of Atlanta 10th, has however lost its last two duels in the NBA: at home against the Hornets 99-112 and at the Celtics 115-101.

Boston hardly ever loses a game anymore. 2nd in the East with a record of 23 victories for 12 defeats, the Clover franchise demonstrated exemplary strength of character in a pivotal moment of the season. Indeed, the 18-time NBA champion is slowly starting to break away from the top 6, thanks to his 8 victories in the last 9 games, including 4 successes in the last 4 outings. After successes against the Utah Jazz 119-129 and the Kings 106-120, the Celtics allowed themselves to beat the Los Angeles Clippers in great form 115-146, before taking the measure of Chicago 115-104 with Jaylen Brown at 25% shooting success 6-24. What kind of victories are these? Still traveling in the Eastern Conference to play its 7th and final match since leaving Colorado on December 26, Denver 4th, 24 wins - 12 losses has lost a lot of feathers during this period. No less than 4 defeats in 6 games, ahead of Orlando 127-126, Miami 147-123, Cleveland 113-108 and Brooklyn 127-115, and especially the serious injury to Jokic during the trip to the Heat. Fortunately, mentally, with a B team, Denver heroically took the measure of the Philly 76ers on the night of Monday to Tuesday: 124-125.

Refresh

So what about some immediate games and the newest NBA sports betting odds? We have you covered. This weekend is full of great games, particularly on Sunday. The Suns are playing the Kings in a great Western Conference duel. Considering their current form and how well the team is playing together, the Suns’ odds of 1.46 make sense over the Kings’ 2.80. The over/under is 227.5 and should be a great over (1.77) to play as both teams have some heavy hitters on their rosters. Among Durant, Booker, and Beal on one side and Fox, DeRozan, and Sabonis on the other, it should be an easy win.

The struggling Bucks are playing the Celtics in what was supposed to be an Eastern Conference clash of contenders. However, it is not guaranteed due to the current form of the Milwaukee team. Still, Giannis and Lillard have a lot to prove and could actually come on top. Tatum is the lone star as his team is incomplete, hence the 1.80 odds for the Celtics and the 2.06 odds for the Bucks. This may be the game that turns it around for the Wisconsin team.

Who doesn’t like when the New York Knicks are good? It is simply great for the league and the sport! They are the favorites in their upcoming clash with the Indiana Pacers as the trades proved successful. Jalen Brunson, Karl-Anthony Towns, and Mikal Bridges on one side, and Pascal Siakam, Tyrese Haliburton, and Myles Turner are more than enough to get you the 1.77 over on the 226.5 threshold. As for the winner, the Knicks should take it. The bookies predict it and give them 1.81 over the Pacers’ 2.05.
