NBA News and Predictions

Roughly a month into the newest edition of the NBA season and already there are plenty of storylines that fans need to know about. While it may have seemed like we got everything figured out before the start, many of the early predictions fell through as some rather unexpected developments took place. Injuries are already piling up, expected contenders are struggling, and there is an overall feeling of uncertainty and unfamiliarity because of these unexpected factors. One thing is certain: it is still rather exciting to see the best of the best go at it night in and night out.

Because of all this, it is not easy for someone deeply invested in the best that basketball has to offer. No longer can you watch a game and know full well who is taking it before it actually finishes. Anything can happen and a bunch of stuff is happening. So how can an average fan of the NBA, or more importantly, an online sports betting enthusiast, prepare for a full slate of games? Is it possible to do enough research and should you trust the odds the bookies make? To these and other questions, we give answers in the following guide. Read on if you love basketball for the newest news, speculations, and predictions.

Struggling Playoff Teams

Two of the bigger stories deal with teams that were expected to make early pushes for the top of the standings and eventually make a deep playoff run. These are mainly the Philadelphia 76ers and the Milwaukee Bucks. Considering the names in their ranks and their past success, one of them more so than the other, they should be good for most of the season, right? Well, it seems like that will not be the case this season. It is already looking very bad for them and we have barely scratched the surface.

Let us start with Philly. The City of Brotherly Love has been Trusting the Process for years now, but alas, it was to no avail. After numerous disappointments and experiments with stars past their prime, Joel Embiid somehow won an MVP and everyone’s spirits were high. Then, of course, his injuries continued as he was still unable to finish a season and take the team past the second round. Now, he has yet to play a single game this season. He was involved in two controversies already.

First, he said that if it were up to him, he would never play in back-to-back games until the end of his career. For this, the league launched an investigation into Philadelphia’s conducting of player absences. Then, the shoved a reporter in the locker room and got suspended for three games. And all of this after missing the first few games due to injury. It cannot get any worse, can it? Well, Tyrese Maxey is out for several weeks with a hamstring injury and Paul George is a bit rusty after missing the first several games of the season. All in all, the 76ers are one of the worst teams right now with a 1-7 record and dead last in the Eastern Conference. Betting against them would not be a bad idea going forward.

Right above them with an abysmal 2-7 record are the Milwaukee Bucks, who, compared to Philly, are not struggling with any drama or major injuries to their stars. Sure, Khris Middleton is absent still and is yet to appear this season, but they are used to it by now. Their struggles come from a few other places. First off, it does seem like Doc Rivers is the greatest fraud in NBA coaching in the last 20 years. Since he took over, everything has gone downhill. Losing Jrue Holiday and getting Damian Lillard proved like a mistake as the team is struggling mightily on the defensive end and the duo of Giannis Antetokiunpo and Lillard cannot carry the entire offense on their own. If one of them misses a game, it is a definite loss, and they do tend to miss a game from time to time.

The lack of help from the bench as well as the remainder of the starting five is simply not enough to compete in the East right now. Other teams are younger, faster, and more talented, while the Bucks are the oldest team in the league with an average age of 30.4 years. All you need to know about their roster struggles is the fact that they are playing a 36-year-old Brook Lopez for 30 minutes a game. There is no end in sight to their struggles and Giannis constantly appears in trade rumors. It would be one of the biggest shakeups in the history of the league if or when the Bucks make a move. This cannot go on for much longer as frustration is already at a peak.

Cavaliers are for Real

On the opposite end of the spectrum are the incredible Cleveland Cavaliers who have run out of the gate to start the season and kept on sprinting. Throw a hurdle at them and they will clear it by a mile. Nothing seems to be phasing them as they opened the new campaign with a 10-0 and it seems like there is no end in sight to their amazing stretch. This is the best start in franchise history, and we are talking about a team that is synonymous with LeBron James. At the moment, Stake gives them the odds of 19.00 to take the title, with 7 other teams in front. Capitalizing now would be an amazing wagering foresight and they could very well do it.

Donovan Mitchel
~Donovan Mitchel

Donovan Mitchel and Darius Garland are leading the backcourt while the twin towers of Evan Mobley and Jarret Allen are anchoring the post. Such a combination of size and speed, offense and defense, is not present in many other teams. Add a constant threat from beyond the arc from the likes of Max Strus, Caris LeVert, Sam Merrill, and Isaac Okoro, and you have a well-rounded team poised for greatness. Betting on the Cavs is one of the surest things in basketball right now so be sure to ride the wave until it lasts. It is a good time once again to be an NBA fan in Cleveland.

Phoenix, Thunder, Celtics on a Roll

This assortment of contenders is doing their thing to open the season as all three teams are great right now. The Phoenix Suns are atop the Western Conference with an 8-1 record, same as the second-best Oklahoma City Thunder. Kevin Durant, Devin Booker, and Jusuf Nurkic are leading the way as the team is winning games, both close and lopsided, and finally playing well together. The chemistry of OKC is unmatched and it is just so good to watch the guys interact with each other and play so well together. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Chet Holmgren are leading the way and their supporting cast is unlike anything else in the league. They could be ready for that final push come playoff time.

In the East, right under the mighty Cavs is the defending champion, the Boston Celtics. With the odds to take another title and cement the dynasty being 3.60, they are still the bookies’ favorites. However, many teams are off to an amazing start and could ruin their best chance at a repeat in almost 4 decades. Jason Tatum is playing like an MVP, again, and several guys are coming into their own, especially Payton Pritchard. With Jaylen Brown and Kristaps Porzingis down with injuries, the Cs have not yet taken out their best starting five onto the court this season. It is a scary thought to have but there is no saying how good they will be when the gears start turning midway through the season.

Numerous Early MVP Candidates

After the first two weeks, the MVP battle looked nothing like we expected it to. Some names appeared there that no sane person would think of. For example, two Clippers players are incredible right now, but none of them are named James Harden or Kawhi Leonard. It is Norman Powell and Ivica Zubac who have been carrying the load and are the main contributors to the positive 5-4 record of a team who were supposed to be where the Bucks and Philly are right now. Zubac is averaging 16.7 points and 12.8 rebounds while Powell is playing out of his mind with 25.7 points per game.

The Sacramento Kings hoped for a better start than their current 5-4 record, but there is a lot to be optimistic about right now. They have three players averaging more than 20 points per game. De’Aron Fox is leading the way with 24.6 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 4.6 assists. DeMar DeRozan is currently at 24.2 points, 3.7 rebounds, and 4.1 assists per game. Domantas Sabonis is averaging 20.6 points, 13 rebounds, and 7.1 assists per game and has already had several triple-doubles.

Speaking of the Lithuanian superstar, he has had one of the best games in history, a perfect game as many called it. In their November 6 win over the Toronto Raptors, he did something nobody else has. Pay attention. He had a triple-double with 17 points, 11 rebounds, and 13 assists. He added 1 steal to it. But the great thing about it is that he shot 100% from the floor, 6/6, 100% from the free throw, 5/5, and did not have a single foul or turnover! Such a game is unheard of and it is a testament to how the new, non-American players (Jokic, Sabonis, Giannis, Luka, Shai) are changing the game.

The Los Angeles Lakers are currently in the 7th spot with a 5-4 record after opening the season in big fashion. With big stories surrounding them, none bigger than Bronny James and the new coaching staff led by JJ Reddick, they are handling the business well enough. LeBron James says he plans to play all 82 games this season, something he has only done once in his 22-year-long career. That is promising as the team needs all he can give them, and he is delivering amazingly well for a soon-to-be 40-year-old.

However, it is Anthony Davis who is leading the way and making an early push for the MVP. The 31-year-old is currently averaging 32.4 points, 11.3 rebounds, 2.8 assists, 1.4 steals, and 2 blocks per game on 57% shooting. These are MVP numbers and should he be able to play enough games, it could be his year. He is also delivering on the defensive end so it could be a battle between him and Victor Wembanyama for the Defensive Player of the Year Award.

Oklahoma City Thunder
Oklahoma City Thunder
If we look ahead to the near future, this San Antonio Spurs team is most likely to compete with the formidable OKC Thunder 1st in the West. The Spurs project is based on young talents, like a pyramid, stone by stone, they are building a team for the title under the orders of V.Wembanyama the French superstar. Second in the Western Conference 21 wins - 7 losses San Antonio has established itself this year as a candidate for the title, capable of stringing together no less than 6 consecutive successes in the NBA. A defeat against the Knicks in the NBA Cup final did not count in the balance sheet, like a victory in the NBA Cup semi-final against the Thunder, or as a reminder against the Wizards in the last match 113-124. The OKC Thunder leaders, 26 wins - 3 defeats, have therefore lost 2 of their last 4 games in the NBA and will be back-to-back this evening. A poor form which began with a setback in the semi-final of the NBA Cup 10 days ago against the San Antonio Spurs 111-109, then the Thunder was then surprised by the striking force of the Minnesota Timberwolves on December 20 112-107. OKC responded by beating the Grizzlies 119-103 but will be back-to-back tonight.

Brooklyn Nets
Brooklyn Nets
The season started around October 22. 2 months later, Philly found itself with a 4th place in the East for a not great record 16 wins - 11 losses. Now if we look at the context with which the 76ers have dealt, and continue to evolve, with Jo Embiid missing a lot of games, it's quite encouraging. Philadelphia won 2 very important games in this regard in front of the NY Knicks 107-116 initially against the 2nd best team in the league at home, and in front of a Dallas which was starting to catch fire 121-114. The problem with Brooklyn 13th, 8 wins - 19 defeats how much even this team is winning matches at the moment 5 wins in 10 games, it nevertheless remains in reconstruction. So yes, it's very nice to correct the Milwaukee Bucks 127-82 last week and last weekend the Toronto Raptors 96-81, but when every morning you are told that your best player, namely Porter Jr, is already announced in all corners of the USA in order to continue the reconstruction chapter, it is inaudible. Finally, Brooklyn, ultimately, has no interest in playing in the Play-offs and should tank severely.

Washington Wizards
This is the perfect example of a match made in Charlotte Hornets. Last night on the road against the Cleveland Cavaliers, things went in all directions again offensively. Generally when it exceeds less than 250 cumulative points the Hornets do well, but against the Cavaliers, it did not happen. The fault in particular lies with a D.Hunter at 27 points coming off the bench 9-13 shooting. Victory 139-132 for the Cavaliers of Mitchell and Garland, when Charlotte remains stuck in 12th place 9 wins - 20 losses. At the Washington Wizards now, we occupy a good 15th place in the Eastern Conference, and we don't really move from there. The Magiciens de la Capitale have only won 5 small games in the NBA this year. A poor record certainly, but remember that 40% of the successes obtained this year by Washington were in the last week, against the Pacers 89-108 and Memphis Grizzlies 122-130. So we can talk about a team at the moment in the form of its life quite simply.

Toronto Raptors
Test season for Erik Spoelstra this year. The first season where Tyler Herro after the departure last year of Jimmy Butler must assume the status of franchise player in a formation where he forms a more or less assumed big three alongside Adebayo and Powell. Vice City as it is nicknamed on the other side of the Atlantic occupies 8th place in the Eastern Conference, in full decline at the moment after a new defeat against the Knicks in Madison 132-125, which follows a setback against Boston 129-116. The Toronto Raptors 5th in the Eastern Conference with a record of 17 wins for 13 defeats unlike the Miami Heat have managed not to sink and string together defeats. However, the loss of RJ Barrett, the local child, member of the Big Three of this formation had considerably slowed down the Canadian pace. Recently the T-Rex of North America beat the Miami Heat in Florida 96-106 on December 16, beat the Milwaukee Bucks 105-111, before sinking twice against Boston 96-112 and Brooklyn 96-81.

Houston Rockets
Laughed over by the entire NBA, this formation of the Los Angeles Clippers 14th, 6 wins - 21 losses hits rock bottom irreversibly. Overall or assumedly, we already started with the idea of doing a sort of “last dance” with Kawhi and Harden. However, the reaction was magnificent and we will be able to write a few nice lines in favor of the Los Angeles Clippers, winners 103-88 ahead of the Los Angeles Lakers very easily. A victory that could be good for morale. Beware of danger for the Houston Rockets engaged in a fight with the top 6 of the Western Conference and for the moment big losers during this final sprint. Indeed, the Rockets have missed the mark several times in recent weeks, losing banned matches at this stage of the season to the New Orleans Pelicans 133-128, notably the 15th in the Western Conference a few days ago. We thought that the machine was finally launched, after a success against the Nuggets 101-115, but that was without counting on this unexpected setback 125-124 against the Sacramento Kings.

New York Knicks
In an ultra-clutch period in the Western Conference at the moment, the outgoing finalist of the 2024-25 financial year is once again responding well. Minnesota 5th, 19 wins - 10 losses has recently gained a place in the standings by winning two crucial matches, firstly ahead of the OKC Thunder 112-107, and then against the Milwaukee Bucks 103-100. The Wolves are in the process of making quite a comeback with no less than 8 wins in 10 games. Thinking about recovering 1st place or finishing second in the Eastern Conference won't change much. If the Knicks have no notable injuries, they will be the big favorites to win the Eastern Conference title with a solid, consistent, collective, experienced and more talented squad than all the others simply in the Eastern Conference. New York at home won its last duel ahead of the Miami Heat 132-125 and winner of the NBA Cup a few days earlier.

Chicago Bulls
Just ahead of Chicago, the Atlanta Hawks are 9th in the Eastern Conference 15 wins - 14 losses and in full decline. After a cannonball start to the season, Atlanta has lost 8 of its last 9 games, including the last 3. Dominated at the Charlotte Hornets 133-126, then more logically 98-126 at home in front of the Spurs of V. Wembanyama, the Georgia franchise lost again in its home Sunday in prime time against these same Chicago Bulls in an incredibly offensive match 150-152. The Chicago Bulls 10th, 13 victories - 15 defeats can return almost to the level of Atlanta in the event of a victory this evening and will be able to count on its return fit for it. In the tough after an incredible start to the season, the Bulls found great resources to win 3 times in a row: twice in front of a generally sick Cleveland, in the United Center 127-111 and Ohio 125-136, and therefore against Atlanta already in Georgia.

First in the Eastern Conference during the last regular season, Cleveland is clearly worse off a year later. 7th with a record of 16 wins for 14 losses, the Cavs have undoubtedly had too many injuries since the start of the exercise to be able to perform better. After 3 defeats in a row against the Hornets 111-119 and Chicago twice 127-111, 125-136, Cleveland raised its head "a little" last night by taking its revenge at home against Charlotte 139-132. After a disastrous start to the season, the Pelicans have finally found rhythm, undoubtedly thanks to the use of Zion Williamson as a 6th man. After 7 consecutive defeats, NOLA remains on 4 consecutive victories. Successes in front of Portland 143-120, Chicago Bulls 104-114, the Houston Rockets 133-128, Indiana 128-109 and yesterday against Dallas 119-113, another Western team in full recovery. As a result, New Orleans went from 15th to 13th place in the West with a record of 8 wins and 22 losses.

Reigning Eastern Conference finalist, Indiana is penultimate this season with a poor record of 6 wins for 23 losses. After a slight increase in energy, the Pacers have just lost 5 times in a row, including against the worst record in the league, the Washington Wizards during a spanking received in Indianapolis 89-108. Last night, Indiana lost to Boston 103-95. Defeated 4 times in their last 5 games, the Milwaukee Bucks are in a worrying situation. Deprived of Giannis for 6 games, Cream City 11th, 11 wins - 18 losses is completely sinking in the standings. Since its surprise victory at home against Boston 116-101, Boston has been crushed by the Brooklyn Nets 127-82, beaten by Toronto logically 105-111 in the Fiserv and narrowly dominated in Minnesota this weekend 103-100.

After a catastrophic start to the season, the Dallas Mavericks 11th, 11 wins - 18 losses are doing better. However, they will need to be better on the move if they really want to get back into the fray. After this nice success in front of the Detroit Pistons 116-114, the current leader of the Eastern Conference, the Mavs have had two defeats on the road: at the Sixers 121-114 and last night in NOLA, a priori a direct competitor 119-113. Denver 3rd, 22 wins - 7 losses is in the race for the top 2 in the Western Conference, behind an untouchable OKC. 7 wins in the last 8 games for the Colorado franchise. The Denver Nuggets were on a dynamic of 6 consecutive successes in the NBA Pacers, Hawks, Hornets, Kings, Rockets, Magic before losing at home against the Houston Rockets for revenge 101-115. Detroit Pistons
The Portland Trail Blazers 10th, 12 wins - 16 losses show a lot of character as the end-of-year holidays approach. An important turning point seems to have taken place in the Blazers season 1 week ago. Following 3 consecutive defeats, Portland restarted the machine with 3 successes. After a victory on December 15 against the Golden State Warriors 136-131, Portland took the measure in pain of the Sacramento Kings 133-134 before making the Kings fall again 93-98 but this time in Sacramento. The Detroit Pistons 1st in the Eastern Conference, 22 wins - 6 losses but like the average odds given to them by the bookmakers 27.00-28.00 person does not really believe at the moment in the chances of the Detroit Pistons. Why, because although the Pistons played in the 1st round of the Play-offs last year, coming to play for the title is another story. As a reminder, OKC, leader of the Western conference in the regular season in 2024, fell in the first year to the Mavericks in the semi-finals, due to lack of experience, let's not dream. Detroit moved forward last weekend by winning against the Charlotte Hornets 112-86.

The Golden State Warriors 8th, 14 wins - 15 losses are going badly but it's impossible to talk about a crisis. The credit of Steve Kerr among the fans, the one who succeeded in founding one of the most beautiful dynasties in the history of this sport on the Californian coast, is immense. Favorites in the last 4 matches played, the Warriors first lost to the Minnesota Timberwolves deprived of Anthony Edwards in the Bay 120-127, then to the Portland Trail Blazers 136-130, and Suns 98-99, before finally taking revenge against Phoenix but it was difficult 119-116. The Orlando Magic 5th, 16 wins - 12 losses goes try to win as many matches as possible in a period that is a little more delicate at the moment for the Floridians, deprived of Franz Wagner and Jalen Suggs, namely two of their 3 best elements offensively. Orlando, precisely after two losses in a row, in front of the New York Knicks 120-132 and the Denver Nuggets 126-115, won the bet with great difficulty in front of the Jazz in Utah 127-128.

The OKC Thunder have never lost so much this season. 2 defeats in its last 3 games, for a franchise which still has a hell of a record of 25 victories - 3 defeats it makes sense to talk about it a little and put it all in perspective. A first defeat this year at the start of the season against the Portland Blazers 125-127, on neutral ground against the San Antonio Spurs in the semi-final of the NBA Cup 111-109 and finally against the Minnesota Timberwolves last weekend 112-107. 3 defeats, never at home, always with a small gap. It still remains very strong for the reigning NBA champion. The Memphis Grizzlies, although they lost their last game to the Washington Wizards to everyone's surprise 122-130, remained on numerous victories in the NBA. More precisely 7 out of their last 9 matches. A few days before losing to the worst team in the entire league in the NBA, M-Town won a duel with the Los Angeles Clippers with a score of 103-121 and beat the Minnesota Timberwolves 110-116 deprived of A.Edwards for the occasion.

Denver 3rd, 20 wins - 7 losses is racing in the top 6 of the Western Conference from 2nd to 6th, where during this period, each victory will count double as the differences are minimal. The Denver Nuggets were on a dynamic of 6 consecutive successes in the NBA Pacers, Hawks, Hornets, Kings, Rockets, Magic before receiving the Houston Rockets for revenge in Colorado. If Denver had made the difference at the start of last week 128-125, the Colorado team logically lost the 2nd 101-115 and a place in the standings to the benefit of the 2nd Spurs. The Utah Jazz are in 12th place in the Western Conference 10 wins - 17 losses currently engaged in a fight. very different and probably lost in advance. The point is not to play in the Play-offs this year. All signals show the opposite, namely the departures of Sexton, Collins, Clarkson plus internal discussions to potentially trade Lauri Markkanen, the Jazz's best player. The Boston Celtics 3rd, 17 wins - 11 losses are beginning a comeback in the Eastern Conference in order not to lose their Play-off chances, remain focused at 2000%, secure a place in the Play-offs with the prospect at the end of the year of getting Jayson Tatum back in the group. The 17-time NBA champion has found his rhythm with 8 wins in the last 9 games, that of a franchise determined to play for the top 3, victorious over direct competitors such as the Miami Heat 129-116 and Toronto Raptors 96-112. When we draw the parallel between the two teams, Boston has been able to adapt its game without Tatum, while Indiana cannot do it without Haliburton. The circumstances of his injury, the impact too, because it may have cost Indiana the victory last year in the NBA in a Game 7 where Haliburton was the best scorer in the game, leaves behind him this year a poor formation. 14th in the Eastern Conference 6 wins - 22 defeats, defeat 4 times in a row and humiliated by the 15th in the Western Conference the New Orleans Pelicans 128-109, nothing is going well for the franchise based in Indianapolis.

Refresh

So what about some immediate games and the newest NBA sports betting odds? We have you covered. This weekend is full of great games, particularly on Sunday. The Suns are playing the Kings in a great Western Conference duel. Considering their current form and how well the team is playing together, the Suns’ odds of 1.46 make sense over the Kings’ 2.80. The over/under is 227.5 and should be a great over (1.77) to play as both teams have some heavy hitters on their rosters. Among Durant, Booker, and Beal on one side and Fox, DeRozan, and Sabonis on the other, it should be an easy win.

The struggling Bucks are playing the Celtics in what was supposed to be an Eastern Conference clash of contenders. However, it is not guaranteed due to the current form of the Milwaukee team. Still, Giannis and Lillard have a lot to prove and could actually come on top. Tatum is the lone star as his team is incomplete, hence the 1.80 odds for the Celtics and the 2.06 odds for the Bucks. This may be the game that turns it around for the Wisconsin team.

Who doesn’t like when the New York Knicks are good? It is simply great for the league and the sport! They are the favorites in their upcoming clash with the Indiana Pacers as the trades proved successful. Jalen Brunson, Karl-Anthony Towns, and Mikal Bridges on one side, and Pascal Siakam, Tyrese Haliburton, and Myles Turner are more than enough to get you the 1.77 over on the 226.5 threshold. As for the winner, the Knicks should take it. The bookies predict it and give them 1.81 over the Pacers’ 2.05.
