NBA News and Predictions

Roughly a month into the newest edition of the NBA season and already there are plenty of storylines that fans need to know about. While it may have seemed like we got everything figured out before the start, many of the early predictions fell through as some rather unexpected developments took place. Injuries are already piling up, expected contenders are struggling, and there is an overall feeling of uncertainty and unfamiliarity because of these unexpected factors. One thing is certain: it is still rather exciting to see the best of the best go at it night in and night out.

Because of all this, it is not easy for someone deeply invested in the best that basketball has to offer. No longer can you watch a game and know full well who is taking it before it actually finishes. Anything can happen and a bunch of stuff is happening. So how can an average fan of the NBA, or more importantly, an online sports betting enthusiast, prepare for a full slate of games? Is it possible to do enough research and should you trust the odds the bookies make? To these and other questions, we give answers in the following guide. Read on if you love basketball for the newest news, speculations, and predictions.

Struggling Playoff Teams

Two of the bigger stories deal with teams that were expected to make early pushes for the top of the standings and eventually make a deep playoff run. These are mainly the Philadelphia 76ers and the Milwaukee Bucks. Considering the names in their ranks and their past success, one of them more so than the other, they should be good for most of the season, right? Well, it seems like that will not be the case this season. It is already looking very bad for them and we have barely scratched the surface.

Let us start with Philly. The City of Brotherly Love has been Trusting the Process for years now, but alas, it was to no avail. After numerous disappointments and experiments with stars past their prime, Joel Embiid somehow won an MVP and everyone’s spirits were high. Then, of course, his injuries continued as he was still unable to finish a season and take the team past the second round. Now, he has yet to play a single game this season. He was involved in two controversies already.

First, he said that if it were up to him, he would never play in back-to-back games until the end of his career. For this, the league launched an investigation into Philadelphia’s conducting of player absences. Then, the shoved a reporter in the locker room and got suspended for three games. And all of this after missing the first few games due to injury. It cannot get any worse, can it? Well, Tyrese Maxey is out for several weeks with a hamstring injury and Paul George is a bit rusty after missing the first several games of the season. All in all, the 76ers are one of the worst teams right now with a 1-7 record and dead last in the Eastern Conference. Betting against them would not be a bad idea going forward.

Right above them with an abysmal 2-7 record are the Milwaukee Bucks, who, compared to Philly, are not struggling with any drama or major injuries to their stars. Sure, Khris Middleton is absent still and is yet to appear this season, but they are used to it by now. Their struggles come from a few other places. First off, it does seem like Doc Rivers is the greatest fraud in NBA coaching in the last 20 years. Since he took over, everything has gone downhill. Losing Jrue Holiday and getting Damian Lillard proved like a mistake as the team is struggling mightily on the defensive end and the duo of Giannis Antetokiunpo and Lillard cannot carry the entire offense on their own. If one of them misses a game, it is a definite loss, and they do tend to miss a game from time to time.

The lack of help from the bench as well as the remainder of the starting five is simply not enough to compete in the East right now. Other teams are younger, faster, and more talented, while the Bucks are the oldest team in the league with an average age of 30.4 years. All you need to know about their roster struggles is the fact that they are playing a 36-year-old Brook Lopez for 30 minutes a game. There is no end in sight to their struggles and Giannis constantly appears in trade rumors. It would be one of the biggest shakeups in the history of the league if or when the Bucks make a move. This cannot go on for much longer as frustration is already at a peak.

Cavaliers are for Real

On the opposite end of the spectrum are the incredible Cleveland Cavaliers who have run out of the gate to start the season and kept on sprinting. Throw a hurdle at them and they will clear it by a mile. Nothing seems to be phasing them as they opened the new campaign with a 10-0 and it seems like there is no end in sight to their amazing stretch. This is the best start in franchise history, and we are talking about a team that is synonymous with LeBron James. At the moment, Stake gives them the odds of 19.00 to take the title, with 7 other teams in front. Capitalizing now would be an amazing wagering foresight and they could very well do it.

Donovan Mitchel
~Donovan Mitchel

Donovan Mitchel and Darius Garland are leading the backcourt while the twin towers of Evan Mobley and Jarret Allen are anchoring the post. Such a combination of size and speed, offense and defense, is not present in many other teams. Add a constant threat from beyond the arc from the likes of Max Strus, Caris LeVert, Sam Merrill, and Isaac Okoro, and you have a well-rounded team poised for greatness. Betting on the Cavs is one of the surest things in basketball right now so be sure to ride the wave until it lasts. It is a good time once again to be an NBA fan in Cleveland.

Phoenix, Thunder, Celtics on a Roll

This assortment of contenders is doing their thing to open the season as all three teams are great right now. The Phoenix Suns are atop the Western Conference with an 8-1 record, same as the second-best Oklahoma City Thunder. Kevin Durant, Devin Booker, and Jusuf Nurkic are leading the way as the team is winning games, both close and lopsided, and finally playing well together. The chemistry of OKC is unmatched and it is just so good to watch the guys interact with each other and play so well together. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Chet Holmgren are leading the way and their supporting cast is unlike anything else in the league. They could be ready for that final push come playoff time.

In the East, right under the mighty Cavs is the defending champion, the Boston Celtics. With the odds to take another title and cement the dynasty being 3.60, they are still the bookies’ favorites. However, many teams are off to an amazing start and could ruin their best chance at a repeat in almost 4 decades. Jason Tatum is playing like an MVP, again, and several guys are coming into their own, especially Payton Pritchard. With Jaylen Brown and Kristaps Porzingis down with injuries, the Cs have not yet taken out their best starting five onto the court this season. It is a scary thought to have but there is no saying how good they will be when the gears start turning midway through the season.

Numerous Early MVP Candidates

After the first two weeks, the MVP battle looked nothing like we expected it to. Some names appeared there that no sane person would think of. For example, two Clippers players are incredible right now, but none of them are named James Harden or Kawhi Leonard. It is Norman Powell and Ivica Zubac who have been carrying the load and are the main contributors to the positive 5-4 record of a team who were supposed to be where the Bucks and Philly are right now. Zubac is averaging 16.7 points and 12.8 rebounds while Powell is playing out of his mind with 25.7 points per game.

The Sacramento Kings hoped for a better start than their current 5-4 record, but there is a lot to be optimistic about right now. They have three players averaging more than 20 points per game. De’Aron Fox is leading the way with 24.6 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 4.6 assists. DeMar DeRozan is currently at 24.2 points, 3.7 rebounds, and 4.1 assists per game. Domantas Sabonis is averaging 20.6 points, 13 rebounds, and 7.1 assists per game and has already had several triple-doubles.

Speaking of the Lithuanian superstar, he has had one of the best games in history, a perfect game as many called it. In their November 6 win over the Toronto Raptors, he did something nobody else has. Pay attention. He had a triple-double with 17 points, 11 rebounds, and 13 assists. He added 1 steal to it. But the great thing about it is that he shot 100% from the floor, 6/6, 100% from the free throw, 5/5, and did not have a single foul or turnover! Such a game is unheard of and it is a testament to how the new, non-American players (Jokic, Sabonis, Giannis, Luka, Shai) are changing the game.

The Los Angeles Lakers are currently in the 7th spot with a 5-4 record after opening the season in big fashion. With big stories surrounding them, none bigger than Bronny James and the new coaching staff led by JJ Reddick, they are handling the business well enough. LeBron James says he plans to play all 82 games this season, something he has only done once in his 22-year-long career. That is promising as the team needs all he can give them, and he is delivering amazingly well for a soon-to-be 40-year-old.

However, it is Anthony Davis who is leading the way and making an early push for the MVP. The 31-year-old is currently averaging 32.4 points, 11.3 rebounds, 2.8 assists, 1.4 steals, and 2 blocks per game on 57% shooting. These are MVP numbers and should he be able to play enough games, it could be his year. He is also delivering on the defensive end so it could be a battle between him and Victor Wembanyama for the Defensive Player of the Year Award.

The Charlotte Hornets 12th, 16 wins - 27 losses will they manage to play for the top 10? Starting the 2nd part of the season with an interesting prospect has not happened for years for the former franchise owner of Michael Jordan. On paper it must be said that Charlotte has good looks. LaMelo, Miller, Bridges, and now Knueppel the rookie superstar. In her very particular style, Charlotte completed a 5-match road trip to the West, achieving 3 wins - 2 losses. After this huge victory in front of the Jazz 95-150, Charlotte took over the Lakers 117-135 and Nuggets 87-110 in the last match. For the Cleveland Cavaliers 7th 24 wins - 20 losses the first part of the season was a total failure. Last year for his first year on the bench of the 2016 champion, coach Atkinson shocked the little world of the orange ball by starting his year 2024-25 with a 15-0, but as usual Cleveland had thwarted a few months later in the Play-offs elimination in the semis. In general, the difference in level as part of MLK Day against the OKC Thunder 104-136 was brutal 48 hours ago.

Indiana Pacers
The Boston Celtics have been oscillating between 2nd and 3rd place for several days. Still better than oscillating between 10th and 11th place as was the case at the start of the season. But the Boston Celtics must find their rhythm again, it is very urgent to finish in this 2nd place and take advantage of the major lack of form of the Knicks who have been unable to win for almost 10 days. Last Friday after a success on the road against the Miami Heat 114-119, Boston took the measure of the Atlanta Hawks 106-132, before falling against the Detroit Pistons 104-103. The Indiana Pacers are still at the bottom of the hole with this 15th place in the Eastern Conference 10 wins - 34 losses. If we take the overall results of the franchise. A good big step back on the situation, it's not too horrible for the Indiana Pacers, winners of 4 of their last 7 games in the NBA, ahead of the Charlotte Hornets 112-114, the Miami Heat also 123-99, the Boston Celtics 98-96, and New Orleans on Saturday November 17, before however falling twice to the Pistons 121-78 and the 76ers 113-104.

Yes Denver ate a pill in front of the Charlotte Hornets capable of anything in one evening - as they did by inflicting a card on OKC - by conceding a severe 87-110, but what a performance from Jamal Murray's partners! Deprived of Jokic for 3 weeks, of Cam Johnson more recently, or even of the entire starting 5 at one point like during this success with the 76ers in full 124-125, the Nuggets impress collectively, as usual. Just before this setback against the Hornets, Denver remained on 4 wins in a row against Milwaukee 108-104, New Orleans 116-122, Dallas 109-118 and Washington 121-115. The Los Angeles Lakers, sixth in the Western Conference 26 wins - 15 losses, have been at the heart of the debates in the NBA for several weeks. Opinions converge on the idea of separating from Doncic or Reaves to the extent that the two would be incompatible. The last named has established himself as a potential All-Star since the start of the year, when LeBron James continues to perform at 41 years old. Putting Reaves off the bench when he returns from injury could be the solution, as the 6th man. To be continued. For now, the Lakers took the measure of the Toronto Raptors 110-93 2 nights ago after losing 5 of their previous 6 games.

Toronto Raptors
Stephen Curry's partners continue their successes and regain this confidence, this level which allowed them to win this series of Play-offs against the Houston Rockets the second with a score of 4-3. 4 successes in a row for GSW, 8th in the West, all at home. Winner of the Portland Trail Blazers first 119-97, then the New York Knicks then 126-113 in a boiling Chase Center, they crushed the Charlotte Hornets in form with a score of 136-116, and easily beaten last night in the last match of MLK Day, the Miami Heat 135-112. The 4th place of the Toronto Raptors is so fragile at the moment. The threat is omnipresent for a Toronto 25 wins - 19 losses, within striking distance of Philly 5th, 23 wins - 18 losses, Orlando 6th, 23 wins - 19 losses and Cleveland 7th, 24 wins - 20 losses. In this context, it seems very complex for the Raptors to keep up the pace, having just been beaten twice in a row in front of the Los Angeles Clippers 117-121 and the LA Lakers 110-93.

3 consecutive successes in the NBA for the Sacramento Kings against top 6 franchises, namely the Rockets 111-98, the Lakers 124-112 in the West, plus the NY Knicks 112-101, plus an additional 4th victory in front of the Washington Wizards 128-115. Incredible revival on the part of the Kings 14th stopped on the other hand for the reception of the Portland Trail Blazers was crucial to continue this momentum against a direct competitor for the Play-in. Focus throughout the game, Sacramento unfortunately lost the lead 110-117 at the end of the match. The Miami Heat players 8th, 22 wins - 21 losses, although they have lost many games recently in the NBA, managed to win serious duels over the last week. Indeed, after a success at home against the Phoenix Suns on January 14, 127-121, the Heat managed to bring down the OKC Thunder 122-120 in Florida. Unfortunately the trip to the Golden State Warriors as part of MLK Day yesterday went rather poorly, losing 135-112.

Minnesota Timberwolves
The Utah Jazz version 2025-26 shows authority at home 9 wins - 12 losses but is often in difficulty on the road 5 wins - 17 losses. For once, the ex-franchise of Karl Malone and John Stockton has been on the road a bit in recent days with no less than 5 away games. The first unfolded like a fairy tale against the Cavaliers 112-123 in Ohio, but the rest will be a little more complex... 4 defeats. The Utah Jazz fell 128-126 to the Bulls, 144-122 to the Mavericks then 138-120 a second time, before losing by 13 points to the San Antonio Spurs 123-110 last night as part of MLK Day. The Minnesota Timberwolves, 4th in the Western Conference 27 wins - 16 losses, had a hectic week. After winning against Wembanyama's Spurs at home 104-103 and Milwaukee Bucks 106-139 on the road without Edwards, they fell to the Rockets still without AntMan last Saturday. To conclude, Minnesota went to the Spurs floor for the revenge this time in Texas. Edwards signed his return with a career high 55 points, but the Spurs will have the last word 126-123 in a better controlled end of the match.

The Chicago Bulls 9th in the East, 20 wins - 22 losses are now ready for the game. The chances of seeing them this high in the Eastern Conference were minimal but the missed departures of the Pacers or the Bucks freed up a few places around the Play-in in the East. A breach into which a Chicago team, victorious in 2 of its last 3 games in the NBA, rushed. A first success against the Jazz last Thursday 128-126, a defeat at the Nets last Saturday 112-109, but a revenge taken in the United Center 124-102 for a 13th success in this room. The Los Angeles Clippers, 10th in the Western Conference with a record of 19 wins - 23 losses, win more games than anyone else in the NBA over the last month. The partners of Kawhi and Harden have scored no less than 13 successes in the last 15 NBA games, for 6 consecutive successes currently in the NBA. It's amazing... but can she still get a top 6 at the end of the season? Because the delay was immense, and the Clippers are still very far from 6th 25 wins - 16 losses. Traveling last night in Washington, Los Angeles took the measure of the Wizards without Kawhi 110-106.

San Antonio Spurs
The arrival of Kevin Durant this summer after the fiasco in the Play-offs last year during which Jalen Green was rightly criticized for being forgotten in important matches is supposed to put the Rockets into orbit. Although KD is 37 years old, Houston took the gamble on making him its superstar. Probably another 1 or 2 years for Durant at this level of play which says a lot about the short-term ambitions of the franchise. In form, the current 5th in the Western Conference 25 wins - 15 losses beat Minnesota 110-105 and New Orleans 119-110 last. The San Antonio Spurs second, 30 wins - 13 losses make for a full season at all levels. A full season in that the franchise is well ahead of its passing times. The objective at the start of the year was a place in the Play-offs preferably via the top 6, but after 50% of the regular season played, an ejection from the top 4 would be seen as a failure. Moreover, this 2nd place is crucial because it allows us to maintain home advantage in the 1st round and in the Western Conference semi-final. Victorious in its last 3 games, San Antonio emerged victorious last night as part of MLK Day over the Utah Jazz 123-110.

Phoenix Suns
This is a bit of the paradox of the Eastern Conference decried as being much weaker than the Western Conference. Because this year a Philadelphia 5th in the Eastern Conference 23 victories - 18 defeats with such a poor record, is it really dangerous? Hard to say. If Embiid returns to 100% why not. But, for now, it is an irregular Philly that we are being served, like the successes against Toronto 102-115 and Indiana 113-104 in the last match, and these two setbacks in the meantime against the Cavaliers 107-133 and 115-115 in the Wells Fargo Center. The Phoenix Suns, 7th in the Western Conference 26 wins - 17 losses, confirm the day day after day that we will have to count on them in the coming weeks. The nice surprise of this Western conference continues its road trip in the Eastern conference. Indeed, the Valley of the Sun after two losses in front of the Heat 127-121 and the Pistons 108-105, signed two successes in a row in front of the NY Knicks 99-117 and the Brooklyn Nets 117-126.

Refresh

So what about some immediate games and the newest NBA sports betting odds? We have you covered. This weekend is full of great games, particularly on Sunday. The Suns are playing the Kings in a great Western Conference duel. Considering their current form and how well the team is playing together, the Suns’ odds of 1.46 make sense over the Kings’ 2.80. The over/under is 227.5 and should be a great over (1.77) to play as both teams have some heavy hitters on their rosters. Among Durant, Booker, and Beal on one side and Fox, DeRozan, and Sabonis on the other, it should be an easy win.

The struggling Bucks are playing the Celtics in what was supposed to be an Eastern Conference clash of contenders. However, it is not guaranteed due to the current form of the Milwaukee team. Still, Giannis and Lillard have a lot to prove and could actually come on top. Tatum is the lone star as his team is incomplete, hence the 1.80 odds for the Celtics and the 2.06 odds for the Bucks. This may be the game that turns it around for the Wisconsin team.

Who doesn’t like when the New York Knicks are good? It is simply great for the league and the sport! They are the favorites in their upcoming clash with the Indiana Pacers as the trades proved successful. Jalen Brunson, Karl-Anthony Towns, and Mikal Bridges on one side, and Pascal Siakam, Tyrese Haliburton, and Myles Turner are more than enough to get you the 1.77 over on the 226.5 threshold. As for the winner, the Knicks should take it. The bookies predict it and give them 1.81 over the Pacers’ 2.05.
