There’s never a dull moment in the Premier League. And with Solskjaer’s sacking to the performances of star players and surprise packages, the 2021/22 season has already been one to remember. The quality of the league just seems to be getting better and better, and that is evidenced by the sheer brilliance of the in-form players. We’ll run through the players that we think have been at the top of their game during this campaign in this blog. And not surprisingly, given how competitive the league is at the moment, not all of the players come from the biggest clubs.

Mohamed Salah

Forget the Premier League: Mohamed Salah is the standout player in the world at the moment. After a brief dip in form during the 2020/21 season, Salah has exceeded his already high standards this time around. The stats speak for themselves. He’s averaging nearly a goal a game, and he’s come up with plenty of assists, too. Of course, it’s not just the number of goals he’s scoring that makes Salah the best. It’s the type of goal. He’s creating his own ‘Goal of the Season’ competition and is scoring them at significant moments. Look no further than his goal against Manchester City. The boy is special.

Phil Foden

It’s amazing -- and scary for fans of opposition teams -- to think that Phil Foden is still only 21. In a sea of brilliant young English players, he’s the one that stands out from the crowd. His stats for Manchester City might not look all that impressive, but as every football fan knows, there’s more to the game than stats. Foden brings something to Manchester City’s table that no one else can. There’s a reason why, despite having unlimited funds in the bank, Guardiola is more than happy to make Foden his main man. He’s not at that level yet -- Manchester City don’t want to rush him -- but he’s becoming increasingly important. He’s been a key figure in all of City’s most impressive performances this season.

Tino Livramento

No one (outside of the Chelsea camp) had heard of Tino Livramento until the beginning of this season. The London-born defender came through the youth set-up at Chelsea but moved to Southampton in August following a contract dispute with the West London club. And boy, Chelsea will be happy they included a £25 million buyback clause. Livramento has been a revelation for the Saints, a key player that seamlessly settled into the team’s style of play. His impact was so significant that he’s already influencing the opinions of experts who provide football tips, and it’s not hard to see why -- in October alone, he helped the Saints to two clean sheets and even contributed a goal and two assists.

Declan Rice

Something special is happening at West Ham United. They were extremely good this season, yet they’ve somehow dug deep and hit another level this time around. They’ve got a host of brilliant players, but the one that really makes them tick is Declan Rice. Still only 22, he’s been a rock in midfield, bringing tenacity, defensive acumen, and an attacking threat. Not for nothing have ex-players compared him to Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard, and there’s every chance that Manchester City or Manchester United put a big bid in for Rice at the end of the season.

Aaron Ramsdale

During the chaotic early days of the season, when Arsenal seemed to be in freefall, it was Ramsdale who helped to get them back on track. They went on one of their best runs in years when he was between the sticks, and now that they’ve (largely) overcome their bad start, he’s proving to be a key player that might just guide the Gunners to the Champions League. He’s only 23, and if he can keep this level of form up, he might just be Arsenal and England’s number one for a decade.
