The most successful nation in the history of world football, Brazil has not won the World Cup since 2002 and it remains on an early elimination experienced against Croatia in the quarter-finals in 2022. This team has not really shone in securing its ticket for the next World Cup. Under the leadership of Carlo Ancelotti, this selection only took 5th place in the South American qualifiers, far behind Argentina who finished in the lead after a final surprise defeat experienced against Bolivia last September 1-0. Since then, the Seleçao outclassed South Korea in a friendly 5-0 before falling to Japan 3-2. Subsequently, the Auriverde took the best against Senegal 2-0 but they were unable to find the resources to defeat an eye-catching Tunisia team last November 1-1.

The French team, for its part, validated its ticket to America without too much problem at the start of the season. The world vice-champions have in fact quietly taken 1st place in their qualifying group with 16 points out of the 18 put into play during their matches played against Ukraine 0-2 and 4-0, Iceland 2-1 and 2-2 and finally against Azerbaijan 3-0 and 1-3 between September and November. Titled in 2018 and beaten on penalties in the final in 2022, the Blues will logically be contenders for final victory next July for what will be Didier Deschamps' last competition at the head of this French selection.

Qualified for the last two World Cups, Denmark obviously does not intend to stop there and it obviously hopes to be able to be part of the celebration which will take place in June and July in North America. Unfortunately for them, the Scandinavians only took 2nd place in their qualifying group behind Scotland but ahead of Greece and Belarus. Well on their way to finishing at the top of their group, the Danish Dynamites missed their last meeting in November by being held to a draw by Belarus 2-2 at home then losing in the clash against Scotland 4-2 a few days later. North Macedonia, for its part, has never had the opportunity to participate in any World Cup until now. Her only feat on an international scale was qualifying for Euro 2021 where she was eliminated in the first round.

That said, this team still finished at the top of its League C group of the Nations League at the start of the year, which allowed it to get its ticket for these play-offs, despite only finishing 3rd place in its group during the qualifiers for the World Cup behind Belgium and Wales but ahead of Kazakhstan and Liechtenstein. In their last outings, the Lions were held to a draw by Kazakhtsan 1-1 and Belgium 0-0 and they also drew with Latvia in a friendly match 0-0. On the other hand, they ended their qualifying campaign with a 7-1 rout against Wales last November.

Absent from all the last editions since her surprise 3rd place in 2002, Turkey intends to take part in a World Cup again this year. This selection has many assets which could allow it to satisfy this ambition even if it must indeed go through roadblocks to fulfill its mission. It must be said that Arda Güler's partners had no other choice than to take 2nd place in their group behind an untouchable Spanish team with whom they were still able to share the points on the last day of qualifying in November 2-2. Before that, those nicknamed "Bizim Çocuklar" our boys had won 3 great consecutive victories against Bulgaria 1-6, Georgia 4-1 and Bulgaria again 2-0. On the other hand, we have to go back even further, to 1998, to find any trace of Romania's participation in the World Cup.

1/8th finalist for the Euro in 2024, the 49th nation in the Fifa rankings only finished in 3rd position in its qualifying group behind Austria and Bosnia-Herzegovina and only ahead of Cyprus and San Marino. Last October, the Tricolores won twice, against Moldova in a friendly 2-1 and against Austria 1-0 before falling the following month against Bosnia-Herzegovina 3-1. The Romanians were still able to finish this qualifying campaign on a good note by winning by a wide margin over San Marino 7-1.

Quarter-finalist of the 2026 World Cup and finalist of the last two Euros, England will arrive across the Atlantic with very big ambitions for the next World Cup. This British selection is still chasing its first trophy since the 1966 World Cup, which is an anomaly for such an impressive team on paper. Thomas Tuchel's men had no trouble validating their ticket for this competition since they won all of their 8 matches during the qualifiers, scoring 22 goals without conceding a single one. Last fall, the Three Lions largely dominated Wales 3-0 in a friendly before winning their last 3 qualifying matches against Latvia 0-5, Serbia 2-0 and Albania 0-2. Uruguay, for its part, qualified for the next World Cup by securing 4th place in the single qualifying group for the COMNEBOL zone.

Federico Valverde's partners finished quite far behind Argentina but they were in contact with Ecuador and Colombia for a place on the podium. Since the end of this South American qualifying campaign, Celeste has played 4 friendly matches. After being able to dominate the Dominican Republic 1-0 and Uzbekistan 1-2, Uruguay was held to a draw by Mexico 0-0 and outclassed by the United States 5-1.

Switzerland’s friendly against Germany in Basel feels less like a casual run-out and more like a dress rehearsal for the World Cup. Murat Yakin’s side comes into this clash on the back of a strong qualifying campaign, where they went unbeaten and showed real control in both home and away fixtures. Recent results underline that resilience, from the gritty 1-1 away draw in Kosovo to convincing wins over familiar European opponents. With St. Jakob-Park hosting, the Swiss will want to test themselves against a traditional powerhouse while fine-tuning details rather than reinventing their identity.

In the last international window, Switzerland mixed pragmatism with attacking flair, especially in their home victory over Sweden, a match that finished 4-1 and showcased their ability to punish defensive lapses. That result followed a more cautious 0-0 away to Slovenia and another solid defensive display earlier in the autumn. Over the past two months, the focus around the Swiss camp has been on maintaining fitness—particularly with players like Djibril Sow and Becir Omeragic managing injury issues—while preserving the compact structure that has made them so difficult to break down.

The United States is automatically qualified for the World Cup by being one of the three organizing countries of the competition. Since the Gold Cup final lost against Mexico, the USA has played no less than 6 friendly matches for a fairly comfortable record of 4 victories against Japan 2-0, Australia 2-1, Paraguay 2-1 and Uruguay 5-1. Now led by Rudi Garcia, Belgium is a hit and easily qualified for a new World Cup by finishing 1st in its qualifying group ahead of Wales, against whom it won its two matches 4-3 and 2-4.

In total, the Red Devils won 5 of their 8 matches during the playoffs.
