4th in the last World Cup and qualified for the next edition in the United States next summer, this CAN, which Morocco of course wants to win, will serve somewhere to prepare the troops for Group C, made up of Brazil, Scotland and Haiti. The Moroccans have only won the CAN once in their history, in 1976. Finalist in 2004, since then, nothing more for Walid Regragui's gang. Playing at home in the competition, Morocco will have to do better than the round of 16 in the previous edition. Remember that the Moroccans won their 8 qualifying matches for the World Cup by scoring 22 goals and only 2 conceded. This is only the 2nd edition of the African Cup of Nations in which the Comoros are taking part.

Before that, they were either ineligible or simply not qualified. In 2021, for its baptism of fire, the Comoros did well by reaching the round of 16 but were eliminated at this stage of the competition. In 2023, this selection did not obtain its ticket to participate in the competition. It's time for revenge for the Comorian selection which still had a very good qualifying campaign for the World Cup, finishing fourth in its group with a total of 15 points to its non-qualified purse all the same.

For Aston Villa, important defender Mings and replacement midfielder Barkley remain stuck in the infirmary. Also, defensive executives Emiliano Martinez (goalkeeper) and Pau Torres (central defender) are uncertain. Against Arsenal, winger Buendia (4 goals and 2 assists in PL) was the hero of the match by scoring after added time. He is applying to start in the offensive sector where Rogers (3 goals and 3 assists in PL), Watkins (3 goals in PL) and Malen (4 goals in PL) can appear. Former Marseillais Kamara continues his good performances in midfield while Belgian international Tielemans also plays a leading role. For Manchester United, senior defenders Maguire and De Ligt remain out this Monday evening.

In addition, striker Sesko (2 goals in PL) is announced as uncertain (resumption), like the 3 Mancunians called to the CAN: Mbeumo (6 goals in PL), the starting right piston Amad Diallo and the executive defender Mazraoui. A priori, Man U managed to negotiate a later start than December 15 (deadline for making players available for selection) and the three men should start. Strong man of the Red Devils, captain Bruno Fernandes (4 goals and 6 assists in PL) highlighted himself with a double on the last day. Attackers Mbeumo (6 goals in PL) and Mount (3 goals in PL) also found the net. The attacking trio was completed by Brazilian international Matheus Cunha (1 goal and 1 assist in PL).

It will not be easy to validate his stay with Auxerre this season. Despite a rather interesting quality of play, Christophe Pélissier's men find themselves in difficulty in the Ligue 1 standings and they will spend the holidays as play-offs, 3 lengths behind the first non-relegation team, Le Havre. After holding off Lyon 0-0 and Paris FC 1-1, the Burgundians carried out an excellent operation by winning against FC Metz 3-1, thus ending a series of 9 unsuccessful matches. But last Sunday, AJA was very poorly paid by losing at the end of a crazy match against Lille 3-4 during a game where it did not concede many situations to its disadvantage. For its part, AS Monaco cannot be satisfied with its performance at mid-season.

If they ensured the minimum in the Champions League by winning a very valuable victory this week against Galatasaray which allows them to appear among the first 24 in the ranking and to glimpse qualification for the play-offs, the players of the Principality disappoint in Ligue 1. As proof, they are only in 9th place in the ranking after their new defeat suffered at the Vélodrome last Sunday 1-0, a week after the one already conceded to the side of Brest 1-0. Consequently, the Rocher club is already 9 points behind the top 4 in Ligue 1.

The second part of the season promises to be testing for this Heidenheim team which, after having already had to compete in the play-offs to maintain its place in the elite, will have to redouble its efforts to try to renew its lease in the Bundesliga over the coming months. 17th in the ranking before this 15th day, Franck Schmidt's men have only gleaned 11 points during their first 14 matches and they are 2 points behind the first non-relegation team, Augsburg. A little better recently, the FCH was able to win against Union Berlin 1-2 and Friborg 2-1 before falling on the field of Sankt Pauli 2-1 last weekend. Bayern Munich, for its part, obviously does not have a competitor of its size this year beyond the Rhine.

Large leader of the ranking, the FCB already has a very comfortable lead of 9 points over its first pursuer, Leipzig, despite its small hitch experienced last week against Mainz 2-2 during a meeting which it nevertheless dominated from start to finish, falling on a heroic opposing goalkeeper. Before that, the Bavarians had crushed 3 nice victories in a row in the league against Freiburg 6-2, Sankt Pauli 3-1 and Stuttgart 0-5. They have also won 5 of their first 6 Champions League matches including the last one against Sporting 3-1 last week and are already practically assured of participating in the 1/8th finals of the competition.

Present on 2 tables this season, Mainz is honoring its colors for the moment in the Conference League. 8th in the ranking before challenging Samsunspor next Thursday, this team will want to keep its place in the top 8 to validate its place in the 1/8 finals of this competition. On the other hand, it is not the same song in the Bundesliga where FSV is struggling at the bottom of the ranking, already far from the first non-relegation place. The men of Urs Fischer, who recently arrived to take over from Bo Henricksen who was dismissed from his position at the start of the month, are in fact 6 points behind Augsburg, 15th. Beaten by Friborg 4-0 and by Gladbach 0-1, the Nullfünfer on the other hand went for an unexpected point against Bayern Munich 2-2 last week.

For their part, Sankt Pauli will also have to get down to business in the second part of the season to hope to quickly validate their stay in the elite. The Hamburg-based club is in 16th place in this Bundesliga, 4 points ahead of its opponent of the day and 2 behind the first non-relegation team. In great difficulty for many weeks, the Pirates of the League had a terrible series of 9 defeats in a row in the league before finally raising their heads against Cologne 1-1. But last weekend, Alexander Blessin's players finally found their smiles again by winning in a clash to maintain against Heidenheim 2-1.

Cagliari is currently 15th in Serie A and is 2 points ahead of the first relegation place. The Sardinians recently ended a bad series of 9 games without a win, 4 draws and 5 defeats by winning, to everyone's surprise, against Roma at home 1-0. However, they relapsed last weekend. Cagliari was not unworthy but logically lost on the field of Atalanta because of a goal conceded at the end of the game 2-1. Expected in the fight at the bottom of the ranking for its return to the elite, Pisa does not defy the predictions.

Indeed, the promoted team now occupies 19th place in Serie A with 4 units of expenditure on the first non-relegation place. Alberto Gilardino's men pocketed their only success against Cremonese at the beginning of November 1-0. Subsequently, they started a negative dynamic again. Pisa took a point at Sassuolo 2-2 before losing to Inter 0-2, Parma 0-1 and Lecce last weekend 1-0.

In a difficult situation this season, Fiorentina is the only team which has still not pocketed a single victory in the league, 6 draws and 9 defeats. They remain on setbacks suffered against Atalanta 2-0, Sassuolo 3-1 and Hellas Verona last weekend 1-2. Udinese is currently 10th in Serie A and concedes 4 spending units on the last European folding seat.

The Friulians do not seem sufficiently armed to play for the top of the table but can, however, be satisfied with having distanced themselves from the red zone, 9 points ahead. Genoa currently occupies 16th place in Serie A, 2 points ahead of the first relegated team. After a sluggish start to the championship, the leaders ousted French coach Patrick Vieira at the end of October. This change allowed Vitinha's teammates to raise their heads. In fact, they went 5 games without defeat in the league, 3 wins and 2 draws, and thus left the red zone. Last weekend, Genoa suffered a setback by losing at home against Inter 1-2. Considered a serious contender for the European folding seats, Atalanta is behind on its progress.

La Dea is currently 12th in Serie A and is 6 points behind 6th place. Since the arrival on the bench of Raffaele Palladino, the Bergamasques have won 2 championship matches, losing 2. Beaten by Napoli 3-1 and Hellas Verona 3-1, they also won at home against Fiorentina 2-0 and Cagliari last weekend 2-1. Betis Sevilla are 6th in La Liga at the start of this 17th day and are clearly doing the job against a good part of the championship. On the other hand, against the "big names", the Verdiblancos are a little less sharp, as evidenced by their three defeats against Barcelona 3-5, Atlético Madrid 0-2 and Athletic Bilbao 1-2. Casually, since the start of the season, these are the only three defeats suffered by the Sevillians. Recently, they even ended an 8-year drought by beating Sevilla FC at Pizjuan 1-2. Last weekend, on the lawn of Rayo Vallecano, Manuel Pellegrini's men failed to find the breakthrough 0-0.

During the week, Bétis tried to qualify for the 1/8 finals of the Copa del Rey on the Murcia pitch, results to come. Getafe, five points behind Bétis, last qualified for Europe, must take a positive result today on the road. Times are tough for the Azulones, defeated four times in the last five days of La Liga, against Mallorca 1-0, Atlético Madrid 0-1, Villarreal 2-0 and still without scoring for the arrival of the Pericos of Espanyol last weekend 0-1. Rigorous, playful and passionate in front of their audience, the Franjiverdes improved their very good first weeks of competition by qualifying for the 1/8 finals of the Copa del Rey by beating Eibar away this week 0-1. On the previous day, Elche fell to Mallorca 3-1, a week after their peppy victory against Girona at home 3-0. 11th at the start of this day, Elche, on the other hand, has only won 2 of its last 10 matches in the league, 5 defeats. Girona are 18th at the start of this day, under the threat of relegation but one victory away from being able to escape the red zone. So there is no fire in the lake, especially since things finally seem to be going better in the game for the Blanquivermells who have just won away on the pitch of Real Sociedad 1-2. Before this victory, the Catalans suffered a heavy disappointment against Elche 3-0. The Colchoneros are now 9 lengths behind the Blaugrana at the top of the standings. It's all the more a shame for Atlético Madrid who had achieved a great series of 7 victories in a row in all competitions. This Villarreal team needs to confirm that they are among the title candidates this season. 3rd with a day behind Real Madrid and FC Barcelona, the Yellow Submarine could come back to 5 points behind Barça in the event of success today, and possibly to 2 points in the event of success during the first day. The stakes are therefore very high for Marcelino's men who have just experienced real disillusionment in the Copa del Rey where they were knocked out by Racing Santander, current leader of the Liga Hypermotion 2-1. A defeat that comes at a rather bad time since Villarreal wanted to move forward after their home defeat against Copenhagen in the Champions League 2-3, which practically earned them elimination from the most prestigious of European competitions. Deprived of La Liga last weekend following the postponement of the planned trip against Levante due to weather conditions, Villarreal will therefore welcome Barça having been victorious in their last six matches in the elite. FC Barcelona was also traveling in the 1/16th final of the Copa del Rey during the week and won against Guadalaraja 0-2.

The decision was made in the last quarter of an hour of play, through Andreas Christensen and Marcus Rashford. Thanks to this victory, the Blaugrana recorded a 6th victory in a row in all competitions, in La Liga against Osasuna last weekend 2-0, Bétis 3-5, Atlético Madrid 3-1 and Alaves with the same score 3-1 and in the Champions League against Frankfurt 2-1. The last defeat dates back to the trip to Chelsea in the Champions League 3-0. In La Liga, the Culers are leaders with 4 points ahead of Real Madrid at the start of this day.

Often considered one of the major nations in African football, Egypt has however not won the African Cup of Nations since the 2010 edition. An eternity for this team which will be expected at a much better level than in 2023 when it was eliminated in the 1/8 finals. The Pharaohs had no problem qualifying for this 2025 edition by finishing at the top of their group ahead of Botswana, Mauritania and Cape Verde. They then finished as leader of their World Cup qualifiers ahead of Bukina Faso, Sierra Leone, Guinea Bissau, Ethiopia and Djibouti to validate their ticket to America. If the Egyptians had not shone during their last international gathering by losing to Uzbekistan 2-0 then being held in check by Cape Verde 1-1 during 2 friendly matches, they won their final preparation match on Tuesday at home against a diminished Nigeria 2-1. Zimbabwe, for its part, is far from being a reference on a continental scale and even less globally.

Indeed, this selection has never played in the slightest World Cup and it has also not made it past the group stage during its first 5 participations in an African Cup of Nations. To reach this 2025 edition, Michael Nees' men took 2nd place in their group behind Cameroon but ahead of Kenya and Namibia. The Warriors, on the other hand, experienced a nightmare during their qualifiers for the World Cup, finishing last in their group behind South Africa, Nigeria, Benin, Lesotho and Rwanda, without the slightest victory on the clock after 10 matches. Last month, the 129th nation in the FIFA rankings lost in a friendly against Algeria 3-1 but found a smile again a few days later by defeating Qatar 1-2.

Mali has a history of quality at the heart of this African Cup of Nations, having reached the last four 6 times in its history. Exited from the tournament in the groups in 2015 and 2017, Mali reached the round of 16 stage during the last two editions and will, of course, try to take a step forward by reaching the quarter-finals. This Malian selection, however, experienced a real disappointment during the World Cup qualifiers, finishing 3rd with 18 points, 1 point behind Madagascar and quite far from Ghana (25 points). Winner of the CAN in 2012, Zambia built on years of good performances, notably at the end of the 90s without ever managing to win it. From now on, we must find consistency for the Zambians who have not passed the group stages since this coronation in 2012.

Worse still, during the 2017, 2019 and 2021 editions, Zambia did not even manage to qualify to participate in the competition. Like Mali, the Chipolopolo did not obtain their ticket for the World Cup, finishing only fourth in their group, far behind Niger and Morocco. On Tuesday, the Zambians were defeated in a preparation friendly played in Spain against the DRC 2-0.

Under Farioli's leadership, the Dragons are hungry and have not lost a single match in the top flight, with an exemplary record of 13 wins and 1 draw.

Their only defeats this season were in the League Cup against Guimaraes 1-3 and in the Europa League at Nottingham Forest 2-0. During the week, aware that it had prevented it from being eliminated from another domestic competition, Porto defiled Famalicao in the 1/8 finals of the Portuguese Cup 4-1 a few days after its victory in the league against Estrela 3-1. Before that, Porto had already extinguished Malmö in C3 with a 2-1 victory as well as Tondela in the championship 0-2. In all competitions, the visiting team has won eight of its last ten matches.

Benfica, 3rd in the elite, has some ways to catch up on Sporting 2nd and Porto leader. We must string together victories like pearls for Jose Mourinho's men who have not had an excellent start to the season this year. But since a final defeat in the Champions League in November against Leverkusen, the Luz players have simply not known defeat, thus stacking up eight matches in all competitions without a setback. At the heart of this series, there are 6 victories, including one as recently as last week, during a 1/8 final of the Portuguese Cup against Farense 0-2. Before that, Benfica had laid the table on Moreirense in the league victory 0-4 and served coffee to Napoli in the Champions League 2-0.

Last week, as part of a 1/8th final of the Portuguese Cup on the pitch of Porto, Famalicao suffered a 4-1 defeat. A few weeks earlier, Famalicao had already conceded a defeat against the same Porto, less rough all the same and in the 0-1 championship. In the league in fact, the visiting team has only won one of its last four matches, it was during the previous day for the reception of Estoril 4-0, which it had just beaten in the 1/16th final of the Portuguese Cup 4-0. 6th in the elite at the start of this day, Famalicao has not given up in the fight for the race for Europe.

Athletic is unrecognizable compared to last season but remains, even from a distance, a serious candidate for the race for the top 6 in La Liga. Ernesto Valverde's men even found a smile again by winning two of their last three meetings against Levante 0-2 and Atlético Madrid 1-0. In the meantime, the Basques had collapsed at home against Real Madrid 0-3. Last weekend, after a goalless draw in the Champions League against PSG 0-0, the Lions returned to their troubles on the turf of Celta Vigo 2-0. During the week, in a competition that he particularly likes, Athletic Bilbao traveled to Ourense in the Copa del Rey, result to come.

Espanyol Barcelona is the nice surprise of this first part of the La Liga season. 5th at the start of this day, the Catalan team had experienced a moment of doubt between September 20 and October 5, 4 days without a victory including 2 defeats but the period of doubt quickly diminished with no less than 6 victories during the last 8 performances in the elite. Last weekend, Espanyol simply piled up a fourth victory in a row in La Liga by beating Getafe at the Coliseum Alfonso Perez 0-1. Before that, Rayo Vallecano 1-0, Celta Vigo at Balaidos 0-1 and Sevilla FC 2-1 were all added to the Catalans' hunting table.

Istanbul Basaksehir occupied 8th place in the SuperLig at the start of this 17th day, 3 lengths behind their opponent of the day. In recent weeks, the results have responded favorably with no less than 4 victories in the last 6 league games. Against Antalyaspor 0-4, Kocaelispor 1-0, Kasimpasa 1-3 and on the previous day on Samsunspor turf 0-2. On the other hand, note the defeat last Thursday during the first day of the group stage of the Turkish Cup against Galatasaray 1-0.

Opposite, Gaziantep is playing at the top of the table this season unlike other years. But compared to Basaksehir, it's a bit of a grimace soup for GFK, who have won only one of their last seven matches in the league including three defeats at home against Fenerbahce 0-4, Eyupspor 1-2 and during the previous day for the reception of the well ranked Goztepe 0-1. Last Wednesday, as part of the first day of the Turkish Cup, Gaziantep succumbed to the charm of Rizespor defeat 5-2.

Competitor from the bottom of the table, the promoted Genclerbirligi got an excellent point from the draw on the pitch of the Kasimpasa Apaches during the previous 0-0 day. Before that, the local team had rediscovered the taste of victory by winning very clearly at home against Karagümrük 3-0, thus stopping the two successive defeats against Kocaelispor 1-0 and Galatasaray 3-2. Last week, as part of the first day of the group stage of the Turkish Cup, Genclerbirligi took the scalp of Bodrumspor, former resident of D1 3-2. Installed on the podium of the SuperLig, Trabzonspor 3rd is clearly in the thick of the matter in the title race.

The former Turkish champion has not lost since September 14 in the championship, going 11 days without the slightest defeat for a record of 7 victories. Victorious in three of its last four league matches on the Basaksehir pitch 3-4, at home against Konyaspor 3-1 and against Goztepe 1-2, Trabzonspor missed out on four against Besiktas on the previous day 3-3. Last week, in the Turkish Cup, the Trazbon residents fell into the trap of Alanyaspor 0-1.

Winner of the African Cup of Nations three times in its history (1980, 1994 and 2013), Nigeria is a leader of the Continent. During the last edition played in 2023, this juggernaut had a very good run but fell in the final against the organizing country, Cote d'Ivoire 1-2. In order to qualify for this CAN 2025, the Super Eagles enforced the hierarchy to take 1st place in Group D, ahead of Benin, Rwanda and Libya. On the other hand, they experienced great disillusionment last November. Forced to go through the qualifying play-offs for the 2026 World Cup, Nigeria first dominated Gabon 4-1 after extra time before seeing its World Cup dreams disappear against the Democratic Republic of Congo 1-1, elimination following penalties. On Tuesday, Nigeria played and lost a friendly match in Egypt 2-1 but the Eagles were diminished. Not really used to shining on the international scene, Tanzania will only play the 4th African Cup of Nations in its history after 1980, 2019 and 2023.

It has not yet won a single match in this competition. During the qualifications for this 2025 edition, the Taifa Stars finished in 2nd place in their group, behind the Democratic Republic of Congo. They made the difference during the last two days with successes against Ethiopia 0-2 and Guinea 1-0. Engaged in the qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup subsequently, Tanzania did not create the feat and was beaten by Morocco and Niger in group E. The selection will therefore not play the first World Cup in its history. Last November, Tanzania lost two hard-fought friendly matches against Iran 2-0 and Kuwait 4-3.

Senegal is seeking a second continental crown, two years after leaving in the round of 16. The current period is favorable to performance for the Lions of Teranga, winners of 5 of their last 6 matches in all competitions. They logically qualified for a third World Cup in a row and prepared for the CAN with friendly matches played last month. If they were no match for Brazil 2-0, Pape Thiaw's players took out their nerves against Kenya three days later 8-0. Second in its qualifying group behind Egypt, Botswana is the surprise guest and the little thumb of this African Cup of Nations.

The 138th selection in the FIFA rankings, which is preparing to compete in the competition for the second time, will however have to wait before entering a World Cup final phase. She finished in penultimate position in her qualifying group dominated by Algeria. The Zebras, however, regained momentum in October against Guinea 3-0 to end a series of 3 defeats. This is their last match to date.

Winner of the African Cup of Nations in 2004, Tunisia has not gone beyond the quarter-finals since and was even eliminated in the group stage during the previous edition played in 2023. In order to qualify for this CAN 2025, the Carthage Eagles finished in 2nd place in group A, behind the Comoros but ahead of the Gambia. Engaged in the qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup subsequently, they validated their ticket for a third World Cup in a row. Without blinking an eye, Tunisia easily outpaced its opponents with a record of 9 wins and 1 draw. Last November, Tunisia played three friendly matches 1 victory and 2 draws and notably held off Brazil 1-1.8th finalist of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, Uganda then missed in 2021 and 2023.

The selection did not tremble to ensure its presence in this CAN 2025. Indeed, it finished in 2nd place in group K, just behind South Africa but far ahead of Congo and South Sudan. Subsequently, the Cranes did not manage to qualify for the 2026 World Cup. Without merit, they had to settle for 2nd place in their group 6 wins and 4 defeats, behind Algeria. Engaged in two friendlies in November, Uganda first beat Chad 2-1 before being defeated by Morocco 4-0.

Burkina Faso has had good performances for several years in the African Cup of Nations. Finalist in 2013, 3rd in 2017, 4th in 2021, it's almost quite strange to have seen her stop at the round of 16 stage in 2023 in Ivory Coast. This year, the Burkinabés will try to take their first title in the edition. It should be noted that despite a very good end to the World Cup qualifying campaign, Burkina Faso did not manage to climb among the 4 best 2nd groups to compete in the play-offs. In November, this selection participated in two friendly matches, won against Niger 3-2 and Benin 3-0.

In its last 4 appearances in the African Cup of Nations, Equatorial Guinea has always passed the group stage, reaching the quarter-finals in 2012, 4th place in 2015, the quarter-finals in 2021 and the round of 16 in 2023. Obviously, this selection will try not to deviate from the rule by making a nice epic in this edition. In November, like Burkina Faso, Equatorial Guinea participated in two friendlies including a victory by the narrowest of margins against Kenya 0-1 and a defeat against the Malagasy 2-0. 5th in its World Cup qualifying group, we will have to wait a little longer to see the Nacional Thunder qualify for a World Cup.

The crisis that Cameroon is going through is deep. Indeed, coach Marc Brys was unceremoniously dismissed by his president, Samuel Eto'o, who preferred to appoint David Pagou as head of the team just a few weeks before the start of this competition. Consequently, the Indomitable Lions clearly lacked the serenity to concentrate on this tournament, especially since on a sporting level, they are also in difficulty. As proof, the Cameroonians failed to qualify for the World Cup by losing 1-0 in the semi-final of the play-offs against the Democratic Republic of Congo last month. Before that, they had taken 2nd place in their group behind Cape Verde but ahead of Libya, Angola, Mauritius and Eswatini.

Gabon, for its part, will not participate in the next World Cup either. 2nd in their group during the qualifiers behind Ivory Coast, Aubameyang's partners were beaten in the play-off semi-finals by Nigeria 4-1 last month. A real disappointment for the Squirrels who had nevertheless won 8 of their 10 matches during their qualifying campaign, including those in October against Gambia 3-4 and Burundi 2-0. Absent from the last CAN, the Gabonese hope to make a difference this year by at least getting out of this fairly tough group.

Sacred in front of its public 2 years ago, Côte d'Ivoire begins the defense of its African champion title this Tuesday against Mozambique. The Ivorians did not particularly convince observers during the qualifiers by only taking 2nd place in their group behind Zambia and only ahead of Sierra Leone and Chad. On the other hand, the Elephants were more solid during the qualifiers for the next World Cup where they beat Gabon, Gambia, Kenya, Burundi and Seychelles with a record of 8 wins for 2 defeats. In November, the Ivorians were beaten by Saudi Arabia in a friendly match 1-0 before recovering against Oman a few days later 0-2. Mozambique, for its part, has never been able to go beyond the group stage in this African Cup of Nations in 4 participations, the last of which dates back to 2023.

To qualify this year, this selection took 2nd place in its group behind Mali but ahead of Guinea-Bissau and Eswatini. However, it was more difficult during the qualifiers for the World Cup with a 3rd place behind Algeria and Uganda but ahead of Guinea, Botswana and Somalia. As a result, the Mambas will not play in the next World Cup. During the last meeting, Mozambique was beaten by Morocco 1-0 and was unable to defeat Chad 2-2 in 2 friendly matches.
