Asian Handicap bets are probably less well understood than any other type of bet. They are popular particularly in football, but are also available in rugby, ice hockey, American Football, etc.

With an Asian Handicap bet, the underdog is given a goal (or half a goal, or 2 goals, etc.) as a handicap, and the favourite has a goal (half a goal, 2 goals) taken away from the final score. If the score with the handicap is a draw, the stake is returned.This produces a win or lose for both teams in every game (or a money-back draw). It is very popular in Asia, where it was first introduced (and which gave it its name).

For example, if Chelsea are playing Everton, and the bookie believes that Chelsea are more likely to win, they might give Everton a +1 handicap, and Chelsea a -1 handicap. Those handicaps are added to the final score.

Let’s say you back Everton to win with a +1 handicap. If the final score is a 2-2 draw, then a goal is added to Everton’s score, and your bet wins.

If the final score is 1-0 (or 2-1, or 3-2) to Chelsea, a goal is added to Everton’s score and the adjusted score becomes a draw: your stake is returned.

So in effect, Chelsea need to win the game with two clear goals for your bet to lose. If there was a -2/+2 handicap, there would need to be a three clear goal victory.

Example of Asian Handicap

In a standard odds market there are three options for the example football game:

• Arsenal
• Everton
• Draw

If you bet on the Asian Handicap market, the draw is excluded and you have two options to choose from. In the example, Arsenal is the big favorite. Consequently, a handicap of one and a half goals applies:

• Arsenal -1.5
• Everton +1.5

The example shows the simplest Asian Handicap bet on Betfair, i.e. the case in which a team is given an initial score consisting of half goals (+0.5, +1.5, +2.5 etc.). The team that achieves the best result following the application of the handicap is the winner. For example, if you bet on Arsenal's win against Everton with a handicap of -1.5, you win the bet only if Arsenal wins the match by 2 or more goals. As mentioned, some Asian Handicap markets assign teams two virtual starting scores (or handicaps, in the case of the favorite!). Here, we have a combination of half or full goal handicaps (+0 and +0.5, -0 and -0.5). These bets are sometimes known as "quarter-goal handicaps":

• Liverpool +0 and +0.5
• Chelsea -0 and -0.5

In this case, the bet is divided between a zero (level) handicap bet and a half goal handicap bet. For example, if you bet € 20 on Chelsea's win over Liverpool with a handicap of -0 and -0.5, you place two bets separated by € 10 (in the example, at the same odds of 2.03) - Chelsea -0 and Chelsea -0.5

• If Chelsea win the match with a difference of at least one goal, both of your bets are winning.
• If the game ends in a tie, the handicap bet of -0.5 loses and the bet of +0 is canceled / refunded.
• If Chelsea lose, you also lose with both bets.

A zero goal start in Asian Handicap bets actually translates to 'Draw=No Bets'. This means that the game must have a winner in order for bets to not be canceled.

The market is similar to the odds market when it comes to betting or banking actions.
